Smack Yacht

I'm thinking about building an Essex Smack/Yacht, about 30'. I've got some mahogany palnking and Oak for frames, any ideas where to go for plans/instructions. Or restore an old one?
(I have done soeme restoration projects but this would be several steps up!)

For Dauntless: he's a former forumite with great experience of wooden boats and the East Coast. If someone can put you in touch, you may find it useful.

Suggest you look at the Smack Yachts about and see how well they sail before you build. Some are better than others

Secret is now in Scotland, sails well, Bird of Dawning(Kent), Merlin(Suffolk) all sail well. Secret was used to help build the small essex Smack Yachts in GRP. Lines must be available. Lines are about on the net for some Smacks, you could use those as a starting point.

Owned Merlin for 12 years, sailed really well.

I didn't realise 'Secret' had left Pin Mill - shame, I enjoyed seeing her around.

If you are still thinking of building your own smack my advice would be use iroko for the planking (although teak is nicer but only if you have won the rollover on the lotto) rarther the mahogany as it reactes pritty badly with the fatening even bronze one resulting in rot I am having fun and games trying to sort a 37fter which is only 46 years old.
