Those of you who like me are saddled with a modem connection (unable to get broadband) will have noticed that the messages are taking longer and longer to load up. This is because of the extensive use of photos and/or emoticons in the messages by us... the users.
I am therefore ceasing to use any photo alongside my name and emoticons in my messages. I hope that others might follow suit. The more people that do so the faster this site will become.

byron,

Support you entirely, and apart from PaulineB most are pretty booring anyway.
Regarding broadband, we're trying to get to the threshold in our village (aprox 2500 subscribers. We need about 200 interested people before BT will take notice.
Suggest you start a local campaign to get people to 'register an interest' (there is no comitment). Suggest they try www.bt.com/broadband as a starting point. You can also check how many people on your switch have registered an interest. (right at the bottom of the page.).

If you check your profile you will see that you there is an option to turn off seeing other user's pictures with their posts. That should speed things up a bit.

In the good old days all browsers used to have an option to disable the automatic downloading of images - which was great for browsing on any connection - but that seems to have been removed recently.

I also think some of the slow performance is down to the YBW server - not your connection. Even on a broadband connection you still get delays waiting for some of the ads.

Thanks for the profile tip. I assume from your comments that you do have broadband? It has often seemed to me that most of the download delay (at least for straight text) is due to the server rather than the connection. Any comments before (if ever available) I shell out for broadband?

Done all that 2 months ago, our change point is 450, 359 signed so far. Even if they put it to my exchange I may still be too far away from the exchange to receive it :(

Yes I have broadband at home. For me one of the greatest benefits is that it is always on. No more waiting to connect to the internet and no more connection charges.

That has lead to a change in the way I use the web. I can drop into the forums whenever I like, and can use other aspects of the internet as I think of it.

The fast connection is useful - especially for downloading software and software updates - but in practice I rarely use more bandwidth than I could get with the modem.

I'm on a 128k iSDN connection, as with DSL the time to load web pages is pretty much the same as a modem, depending on the server and the time of day, you notice a real difference when downloading large files. I'm sure others will have different opinions, the best thing is to try it before you buy, however you live in a village like mine you've got no hope getting it anyway as its not viable for BT - pity its not connected with mobile phone masts, then you only have to live near a main road and you get hundreds of the bloody things.
