Sloop or Cutter?

Sloop, Sloop, Sloop, Sloop, Sloop. Had a 32' cutter, staysail didn't seem to add much. Sloop with roller reefing. Nice and organised, no fumbling about risking your neck. Easy sailing. Well that's my view, for what it's worth.

English channel, gets breezy, reef a bit, painlessly and run for it. That's what I do.

Slooooooooop!

But then I'm a chicken!!!

Yes, it was "Alex of Kip" Unfortunatly mine isn't for sale yet so I couldn't really go for it. Perhaps a blessing in disguise because it had IMF which I am not keen on but was prepared to put up with it. I have now found 2 beneteaus I like, one is a normal sloop and one is a cutter.

And if the inner forestay is close to the top of the mast then unless they are both tensioned up to the same load that a single forestay would be then one will suffer more sag off to leeward of the luff of the sails set on them. If they are tensioned up to the same as a single forestay would be then one doubles the compression load contribution on the mast from the forestaying (and also the same from the backstay as its tension increases as the forestaying tension does) and it is worth checking that the rig can stand all that without too much loss of safety factor if tight luffs are wanted.

Re:If

Don't agree - tacking 2 smaller headsails is much less hard work than an overlapping genoa.

Aarrgghh............

I was on the way to coming over to this side, but you guys are giving me a headache/forums/images/icons/crazy.gif
genoas, staysails, backstays, babystays, forestays, inners & outers, spinnakers, cruising chutes, gaff rigs, mizzens, mains, sheets, halyards, shrouds, cutters, sloops, luffs, leeches, clews, kicking straps,mainsheets.............the list is endless. No wonder most mobos are happy with a wheel and ignition key and a throttle or two. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Moose, this is all your fault.
