I have a 20m/50 ton wooden boat. Larch on Oak trawler. French built.
I will have to do some work on the underwater bits and probably a lot of caulking and am not keen on working between the tides. This pushes me towards having it done in a yard.
Can anyone help me to make some sort of estimate of the cost of slipping and caulking a large wooden boat. Possibly just a vague comparison with another boat of similar size and a brief description of how much work was done. At the moment the best offers are £1000 to slip it for inspection and a quote or take it to a yard to dry it out for the same.

Or maybe they have crystal balls on e bay!

West country based! Spain would be lovely but commuting to a UK job to earn the cash required to feed the new habit would be a bit of a pain!
I was hoping to find someone who has had major work done in a UK boatyard recently.

Just a thought.... would it be feasible to put her ashore near the top of a high spring tide? And then you might have a few days (?) clear for working on her before the waters come lapping round your ankles again?

Definitely worth considering. lots to organise,, Good spot, right height above datum, hard ground, decking to stand on, legs or cradles or a wall to lean against plus enough hands and expertise to do job in time available and time off work! Power supplies and water.
Sounds like a "humbug" Christmas coming up!

There was a guy who posted on here who bought a trawler for a TV series about boats and cooking. It was about 18 months ago and I am sure he had his boat slipped in the westcountry to replace some planks. I remember that he paid £1 for the boat and ended up taking it to france. Maybe another forumite could find the post.

Thank you all for bothering to reply.. First time I have used a forum and it's quite amazing!
I know Tommy and the Polruan yard and have dealt with Mashfords etc so will end up getting a quote from a yard "like you do".
It's over 15 years since I dealt with wooden stuff so I am quite out of touch and never was an expert anyway!
I had hoped I might find someone who recently had major work done in a yard to get the "consumer side of the story" and maybe a bit of a feel for the expected cost before I went in to get quotes.

The Excelsior yard at Lowestoft has a couple of slips - the large one was built for trawlers. It'll certainly take 50 tons. Excelsior is over 80 tons .Kenya Jackaranda had a whole new starboard side fitted there a few years ago. Just about everything in Lowestoft tends to be cheaper than on the South Coast. The small slip at the yard is often used by wherries through from the Broads. Currently Albion is on this slip. She's had a steel keel fitted which has removed fourteen inches of hogging and (re)gained a lovely sheerline. Couple of planks also out on either side at the moment. OF

I've never done this, but wouldn't it be best to tackle this problem in two stages?
Stage one, arrange to dry out on a tide and get an expert to do an assessment of work necessary, time, and possible cost.

Stage two, depends on (1). ie haul out at a yard for major work, or do-able DIY between spring tides, or somewhere in between?

There's a slip and a great big shed at Padstow that swallows up trawlers. It can be bit of a struggle to get there by car/train (or by sea, depending where you are), but it used to be cost-effective for haul-outs as they specialised in fishy stuff, not yotts. Not sure what level of skills are available locally though.
