So it turns out it doesn't exactly need "programming to the boat" once programmed at the factory, there is an auto-configuration that can be performed that discovers the units on the network.
But having done that, things need recalibrating, e.g. trim gauges.
Either way, I am happy that someone that knew what they were doing did that.
Many Thanks to Golden Arrow Marine at Port Solent for sorting it all out quickly - they even fixed my dodgy fuel gauge that had been annoying me for months.
Here's a very boring video:
A D4-260 with a new PCU.
No alarms and no surprises.
No electrical smoke.
No shouting.
