I am faced with the most tremendous dilemma

I am considering a Hunter Liberty or Minstrel

I want the Minstrel because I really want a gunter rig so that I can drop the mast easily

sadly this means that the rig compression is taken by a pole in the middle of the cabin

The Liberty is the same hull but with a two masted cat rig

leaving a clear cabin space so that the cabin table turns it into a double berth

Jilll likes to sleep with me in a double sleeping bag - the stated reason being that she needs my body heat.

when it is cold sharing a bed with jill is it is like sleeping with an ice packed rucksack clamped to my back

She says that she will come sailing with me more often if I buy a boat that will accommodate the double sleeping bag

here are the boats?

here is my wife

this film has the hunter liberty in it

and this one has my wife in it

What should I do?

buy the lesser of the two boats or sleep with my wife?

IIRC one of my first cotributions to the forum was about interior yacht design and sex...or lack of it in its influence on yacht desgn. You are not meant to sleep togther in a small british boat its not what you do,hence the totally arbartuary positioning of a pole in the cabin.

I am in absolutely no doubt that if your good lady would like to come sailing with you her wishes should be accommodated - handsomely and fulsomely and without stint or reservation.

Would a tailor-made double sleeping bag with notch for pole taking the strain meet the case?

If not, no doubt the good lady could be coached to assist with dropping the cumbersome masts?

perhaps I couold take a hack saw to the existing mast prop and carry and acroprop for when sailing

this is a plan

I am still looking for one of these boats

there is bound to be one sitting unloved in a yard some-where

I have a feeling I may not be the only one confused, Dylan. I think you prefer the Minstrel (you called them both Liberty in your post) and it's the one which wouldn't accommodate the double sleeping bag. So aren't you saying the choice is between buying the preferred boat and sleeping with your wife?

you are correct

Sorry. I have a snoring problem to add to the mix.
I say it's her and she says it's me.

Here's an idea. Get your gunter rigged boat. Remove compression post and get an arch made to replace it. There won't be huge compression from a gunter rig. All it's doing is holding the mast vaguely straight. There's that much twist off above the gaff jaws that there is no point in having a rigid mast and the is absolutely no point (or way) of inducing mast bend.
A nice decorative arch in aluminium (2 plates bonded with blocks between) will create a lovely harem feel to the cabin.

I have never taken issue with a pole in a cabin but my mate had a bit of a ruck with a Slovak lorry driver on the Norfolk Line once.

good thinking

seems more sensible to me - to have the best of both worlds

and your solution is better than the acroprop

IIRC about 30 years ago there was an article in Voiles et Voiliers about the suitability of different boats for ye'know...

You go sailing to see the Birds, not get it

Look, Dylan, just buy that old needs TLC but otherwise OK Centaur, You know you want to.

With Forepeak double layout, Dimplex greenhouse heater & a small oilfilled leccy rad, brick and flowerpots on a burner or an Origia 'pot'for non-marina work. And space for the Harem Euench in the quarter berth too

Worked for us on the RF ok, and we were fiery & younger in our Wayfarer days;);););)
