Having just bought a Hurley 22 which has roller reefing on the main I am keen to convert to slab reefing. I notice that Barton sell kits to convert this. Does anyone have experience of such things? In particular, is it necessary to get a new boom?

Thanks in advance.

How are these fixed to the boom? I notice Barton recommend pop-rivets for attaching their mast steps - not sure I would want to trust my life to a pop rivet. (Or even 4 of them). Has anyone used this type of folding mast step? It seems ideal for short-handed crews.

I've just fitted the Barton folding mast steps with pop rivits and they do seem very well fixed, (they are not small rivits). What I haven't done yet is go up them as the mast is still down! I've trusted my weight to the spreaders on many occasions and they are only held on the same wayso don't see a problem. Always use a safety line!

Re: Barton Mast Steps

Perhaps you could post a report here once the mast is up when you've had to use them in earnest, and let us know if they whistle or rattle in a bit of a blow?
