A friend has offered to have a go at refurbishing my ancient, corroded Seawolf 520SL

The internals are mostly good, but the motor is u/s and will have to be replaced. There are lots of electric motors out there on the web, but my friend would like to know as much as possible about the original motor before sourcing a new one. In particular, he would like to know the torque of the original motor.

Can anyone provide any info?

Slspares.co.uk are your best point of contact. They acquired the spares stock when the business closed and have lots of information and expertise.

They sell a replacement motor, but only with a new cover. £400 + VAT + delivery. Not sure if they will help with free info, but have emailed them.

Meanwhile, does anyone on here know the details of any equivalent motor?

SL Spares is THE place for a real motor. I had a Seawolf 520 and rebuilt it using spares.
Most of the torque for the windlass is generated via the gearing on the other side from the motor.
Rewinding specialists should be able to refurbish it for well under £400!
The Gypsy side bearings are worth replacing as they are exposed to the elements. If you can measure the OD/ID thickness you could probably find sealed bearings to replace the originals. Try "Simply Bearings " and similar suppliers.

It comes with a cover because they are supplying a physically larger (longer) motor.
I refurbished mine about three years ago, if yours is like mine (up only) note that what looks like a bearing on the gearing end of the motor is in fact a one way clutch.
The motor didn't appear to have that high a torque. When I cleaned up the brushes contact area I noticed that the springs were quite weak due to the wear on the brushes. Rather than trying to source new brushes, I put pads in between the brushes and springs. ;)
If you haven't got the installation/maintenance book, I can scan mine for you.

Thanks, I have the book. My pal who is going to refurbish it for me says he would like to know the torque of the motor.

Rewinding it is not an option, it is way beyond that.

I don't suppose you know the brand/model of motor SLSpares use, do you?
