With Brexit coming up we had better move our Sasga 42FB to Cherbourg as if a EU customer wants to but it in the future they hopefully won't have to pay VAT.
Because of Covid we have to hire a skipper, Lloyd Wheelhouse was suggested to us as he is in Gosport too. Apparently has all the paperwork but informed me that the regs demand that he has to have another crew member, no sure about this so would appreciate input. I will keep updating to see how things go.

Have crossed the Channel many times single handed in anything from a RIB to 50 footers. Not sure I would have a problem doing so in this situation, but a paid commercial skipper will have other considerations. criteria and obligations to meet, so can understand why they would likely require crew.

Commercial skippers want the work & cross channel isn't too difficult.

As one I would as would my insurance.

The duration of the crossing might make a difference as would departure and destination.

Commercial delivery skippers wouldn't have a problem.

As it turned out even though we paid extra because of a second crew member and bought the ferry tickets, we only just found out that the skipper decided to go alone. Very disappointed after being told it was a requirement for professional skippers that we paid the extra. Looks like sharks not only in warmer climes but in Gosport too. Of course we will be asking for reimbursement, fat chance of getting it probably.
Interesting points raised.

Wow that was a quick journey.
Sounds like maybe a risk was taken regarding skippers insurance.

This seems an odd post and I wonder what the agenda is.

In the course of 10 hours a new member names a skipper and suggests this is something he is planning to do. Then magically the boat has moved, only one person employed ( “ they found out “) and the person is then slammed for not giving a refund etc

The skipper would not even be back in the uk yet.

I assume that dissing the skipper was the aim all along.

What you are prepared to do ‘for fun’ and what a commercial skipper is prepared to do are two different things. I’ve worked as a commercial skipper so I’ve got some idea.
Try phoning a few recognised delivery companies and seeing what they say and then I humbly suggest you’ll be eating your words.

Doubt it, independant commercial delivery skippers often have a different agenda to delivery "companies".
Evidenced in post #12 & skippers intention to go it alone.

The fact that an alleged commercial skipper was prepared to almost certainly risk his professional indemnity insurance says nothing at all. There are plenty of ‘amateurs’ who deliver boats very cheaply or for nothing at all. (I know as I’ve been undercut by just such people). Find me a professional skipper who is prepared to deliver a boat cross channel single handed and show us his indemnity insurance that covers such a contract. I don’t believe you’ll find one.

I think you need to take a reality check about risk and reward regarding an expensive asset.

I’ve no desire to enter the debate about the skipper the OP hired as I suspect the forum is being used in a manipulative way.
