Skipper 19

I have just acquired an old Skipper 19 as a first boat and have no clue as to how to operate it ! Does anyone have a user’s manual or know where I can obtain one ?

Is it one of these? Looks to be American maybe. Built late 80's early 90's. Maybe try on American forums will get a response as googling it just brings up American boats for sale.

What part of the boat do you need to know about specifically, or if it's your first boat, are you a complete novice and need to learn everything? If so, maybe find someone local with a bit of experience to run through it with you and help you.

Yes indeed. That’s the one ! I know little about sailing but learning the theory. Boat missing cockpit cover and door and needs some refurbishment! It had been sailed up until last year. I suppose too old to get replacements for it but if I had a manual for it it would be a good start. Thanks for your help

Google "Skipper 17" and you should find some useful videos

Boats like that never had a manual as such - maybe a few bits of paper about the gear fitted, although in a boat as simple as this would have very little specialist stuff. They were very popular at the time with over 1000 built in various forms- I looked at buying one when they were new as my first boat, but finally went a bit bigger with a 19' Sea Wych.

Still plenty around and as Vic says use Google and you will get lots of contacts and information.

Unless you want to do the full "In at the deep end" Paul Heiney thing, some outside assistance would be advisable; if there's a sailing club local to you consider joining, or if clubs aren't your thing or there are no local clubs then some RYA training, Competent Crew and Day Skipper, to get you sailing safely.

Thanks for that. Sensible advice. No club as too isolated but I’ll try to lean on a few old salts for help and what replacements required !

Skipper 17 was designed by Peter Milne in 1973 who designed the Fireball dinghy. The design was eventually taken over by Morton Boats in Lincolnshire and greatly upgraded quality wise. They sold it as the Eagle 525 and built 69 hulls. Both types were a common sight on Rutland Water. They stopped building them in about 2004 when the economics stopped working. There are Facebook pages for owners and such like. A bit of Googling will bring up like minded types. It's a good little boat.

I think that should say "1973", because my father owned the very first prototype one from new, and bought it in either 1973 or 1974 after it had been shown as the "Skipper Mariner" at the London Boat Show. I still have the trailer, in pieces, in my workshop.
