Looking at the exit/exuast/outlet, whatever you want to call it, for the bog on the boat I notice that is going furry. The kind of furry you get on the negative terminal on a car battery. It looks as if the fitting is bonded to the anode on the boat. I didn't think that it would have to be. There is no inboard engine, it has an outboard on a drop down bracket.

Can I safely cut the bonding wire and clean up the fitting. It looks to be a Blakes fitting made from either bronze or brass. The inlet fitting doesn't look to be bonded at all. Its fine. I'm down at the boat at the weekend and will be taking them out anyway to reseal them.
Thoughts on it?

If its a newish Blakes fitting it will be DZR, If its old it could be bronze. I dont know when Blakes switched from bronze to DZR.

It should not be bonded to an anode It is not necessary if its DZR or bronze.

look at it critically, while you have it out, for signs of dezicification in the event of it being brass.

What else is bonded to your anode ?

I'd guess that the deposit is calcium carbonate.

As Vic says, don't bond components that are intrinsically corrosion resistant. It is too easy for slight differences in composition to turn one of them into an anode, increasing corrosion rates rather than reducing them.

Are you sure it's corrosion, not calcium deposits like this one?

Its furry on the outside, the same sort of thing you get on the "dry", ie no grease, connection on the negative terminal of a car battery.
I've not yet had it out or apart yet. I couldn't see how the thing operated. Looking at pictures on the web its the same or similar to a Blakes fitting.
Its bonded by a wire with a crimped eye on one of the mounting studs. I'll take it out this weekend when I'm over in essex. If all else fails I'll have to replace it. They seem expensive for what is basically a stop cockIreally want to be sure fittings below the waterline are sound and secure.
