Folks,

I am currently looking for my first motor cruiser to use on inland waterways and a bit of coast and estuary use, probably 20 to 25 foot.

i have been around boats when I was younger but wondered it anyone could give me some advice on courses it would be worth me doing and also is there any thing mandatory that I need to pass ?

i have been looking at the rya day skipper online theory course to start.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi, great to hear that you are getting a boat. There is nothing mandatory regarding training... yet but there are some excellent courses out there. Powerboat level 2 will teach the basics in a smaller boat or, perhaps more appropriate for you is the RYA practical day skipper course on a motorboat -a couple of day on a training vessel will teach you/remind you of a lot and also be great fun!

I did day skipper in the class room. Much more involved and fun than on a keyboard
PB2 was also good fun

Day skipper is not that relevant to your use and the online course is boring - better in a classroom.

Best thing for you is to pay for an instructor to spend a day or 2 with you on your new boat.

Then see what you need from there.

Yep, what they said ........ Day skipper theory with a training school or with an instructor in a class, good fun doing it in a group and the others will ask loads of questions you wouldn't think of. plus get out in your boat with an instructor, that will give you tons of confidence and practical knowledge.

There is no mandatory requirement in the Uk apart from VHF license and to have a plan (can be detailed to include waypoints bearings tides etc or simple as going to Cowes for lunch)
However, a PB 2 will give you a very good grounding over 2 days with only1/4 to a 1/3 theory the rest being practical.
Or hire an instructor for a day which will give you a good idea of what you need.
Day skipper theory is of little use on inland waterways

Recent RYA Powerboat 2 course attendee Highly recommend Did mine 1-2-1 for a little extra in a single day and was very happy.

As already mentioned, powerboat level 2. Talk to your instructor about your plans, and he’ll probably offer or recommend someone to spend a day or 2 with you with your new boat.
I upgraded last year and an instructor cost me £240 per day - cheaper than paying for a repair
