I'm getting back into motor cruising after a few years away. Last boat was a Princess 42 based in Torquay. I'm thinking of getting something bigger this time, perhaps 55-60ft. However, I'm a bit worried about what this might mean with regards to the ease of finding a visitors berth in the South coast marinas or even taking a mooring in the Dart or Salcombe harbour. Also across the channel? I would be very interested in the views of anyone with experience. I'm hoping that I'm worrying unnecessarily?

We have a Fairline Squadron 58 based in Lymington. As to find a visitor's berth in the Solent, it just requires some planning earlier in the week before the weekend you intend to go - for example, last minute arrivals in Yarmouth are doomed to failure.

Both Dart and Salcombe have visitors pontoons. If there's space then you'll have no problem. Also buoys usually available in Salcombe and Dittisham. Plus the 2 marinas in Dartmouth/Kingswear. Between that lot you should find a space.
