Am I alone in the belief that across all the forums on here recently, there seems to be an ever growing tide of intolerance against any vessel that creates wash, regardles of origin or type

PWCs, RIBs, and MOBOs and even the RNLI all seem to be getting a lambasting because they create wake.

It seems that there are water users out there, who would ban any vessel with an engine if the water so much as ripples within a cable of them.

Are we going to have a small and voiciferous minority begin to formulate a lobby to bring motor driven vessels under some sort of regulated regime?

I for one will stand up and defend my right to go to sea in any vessel I choose..

or am I alone and just being paranoid?
 
YOu're being paranoid .. nobody is moaning about wash just idiotic behaviour that spoils it for ALL sensible water users.
 
Have you noticed the price of fuel lately - and discussions surrounding the taxation of it ? Somethings definitely afoot ! Be on your guard ! Have no doubt they're after doing away with all stinkies. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
 
You're right about under current, mobos aren't "green" so they will have to be taxed, best way is to fine for speeding and fuel.

Will the R.N.L.I. have to pay the new fuel duty ?

Will the fishing fleet have to pay it ?

Surely its bad enough with the oil price hikes that are presently taking place due to Iraq without the government adding to the problem although this government seems to revel in doing just that. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
 
6 feet =1 fathom
100 fathoms = 1 cable
1000 fathoms = 1 nautical mile
3 nautical miles = 1 sea league
60 nautical miles = 1 degree


From my distant memory, I believe the measuremet was the total length of the anchor cable/hawser on old ships. Hence the peculiar distance.....
 
Interestingly, after maybe 15 years of visiting Studland beach by boat, we left the tenders on the beach last Sunday, with a small anchor running up the beach a few feet. A few minutes later, we get the National Trust warden over in her little truck, saying we have to get them off the beach, as someone had complained that they had almost tripped over the garish purple/yellow rope.

It seems that no boats are allowed to touch the beach if they have motors, not even tenders. SteveE asked her what her suggestion was for how we should secure the tenders so they weren't on the beach, but she replied she knew nothing about boats.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but the National Trust has a duty to provide open access to land in its care. Except, it seems, if you're a motor boater, in which case, you are not allowed access.
 
You should use my ADDR method Auto Dinghy Deploy and Recovery.

I got fed up with dragging the new heavy dinghy up the beach.

About ten foot rope and chain, anchor, then long rope to beach and nuther anchor. Alight from dinghy, push dinghy out, throw anchor out and take rope up beach and tie other end securely to warden /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If you are between the low water mark and the high when technically its the Queens' Bottom - aweful expression but true.

This is effectively common land and you can use it. Private land is ashore of the MHWS mark.

Anyway thats what I am lead to believe.

So two figures to NT peep.
 
Nice idea, but [--word removed--] all use on a beach as shallow as Studland.

OK, big heavy anchor with long line running through ring on anchor stock. One end of line attached to tender, other end goes through ring on one of those screw-in-the-ground dog anchor things on the beach and back to the tender. Tender to beach, get out, haul line and tender goes out to sea and sits over heavy anchor till required.

Or was that your system, and I'm just stupid?

So if you can launch a boat up to 20hp surely you can't have been committing any National Trust crime - except maybe by not paying them to launch???
 
Well,

I went down to Touquay last weekend and stopped off at Dawlish to pic my daughters up from the beach. It shallows slowly so dropped hook some way out in 5mtrs on a falling tide.

launched the tender and proceeded to head towards the beach where the girls were waving frantically... on approach and about a cable out, a lifeguard jumped out of his chair in the tower and with a bull horn bellowed at me to stop and beware of the netting laid out in front of the beach... he directed me to a rocky beach and said thats the only place I could land...

Now I know there are no Great Whites or Zambezi sharks in this part of the world so they were not shark nets....

I eventually landed and went up to the lad in the tower. The spotty youff said " it 's to protect the swimmers mate!! I pointed out that firstly I wasn't his mate, and secondly there were no swimmers in the water or on the beach.... he shrugged his shoulders...

But then I'm a little paranoid I guess.
