Simrad RD68 doesn\'t work on Ch 80

I have a Simrad RD68 on my Hanse 342 which works fine on all channels except 80. It has been back to Navico twice and they say they have checked it on the bench and it is working fine so it must be a problem on my boat. Hanse said if the radio works fine on any channel then the boat is ok and it must be the radio.

Anybody got any clues what is going on?

Just a thought, but I expect they checked this when you returned it.

Its not got itself set to US has it?

In US they use "80A" where you transmit and receive on 157.025
Here, on 80 (with no A) we (ie boats) transmit on 157.025 and receive on 161.625 (which is the frequency marinas transmit on).

If you were set to US you would expect the marina to hear you, but you not to hear the marina. Also you would be able to hear other boats calling the marina, which is not usually the case for UK VHF sets.

I have had this problem on my last boat, It is possible to get ch 37 & 80 but it is not explained clearly in the manual. I suggest you ring Navico and go through the procedure on the phone.
PS From memory I think you press select and highlight the channel from the display and press enter. You only have about 2 seconds to achieve this.

it couldn't be because the dozy marinas aren't keeping a radio watch, could it?

[/ QUOTE ] I have experienced this malfunction in the past, particularly with Cowes Yacht Haven. Maybe they've just been busy.

On the other hand, the non-responsiveness could stem from the moment when you said "...this is Two J's III...." /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

[/ QUOTE ] Not possible, because I left negotiations to the delightful Mrs Stuge!

Two J's III, like American Express, is welcome everywhere. Somebody has given a 30m Sunseeker a similar name and marinas always get excited when we call, salivating at the thought of the mooring fees. We get a berth with loads of space and they get seriously disappointed. The notable exception to this rule is LYH, who try and squeeze us into a berth suitable for our old 25' Dehler and still charge for the extra!

Had same problem on another brand radio and it was found to be set up in US mode, setting to international mode sorted it out.

Re: Simrad RD68 doesn\'t work on Ch 80

I have an RD68 but cannot remember exact way but 37 & 80 can be accesed on an RD68 but it is not as strait forward as punching in the no's if I remember correctly you have to access M1 & M2 by pulling out one of the Knobs If you want I will look it up in Hand book when I next go on Board

Re: Simrad RD68 doesn\'t work on Ch 80

The manual for this radio is a free download from Simrad. I've looked at it, and it reverts to "International" mode whenever it is switched off. You can set it to a second country mode, but it reverts on shutdown.

However, if the unit was sourced from the USA, perhaps it is a USA model? It appears from the manual that the channel set - including national variations - is set at the factory.

The manual includes instructions for getting to M1 and M2. Basically, press a numeric key, then press the button labelled "Aux" in the LCD, then scroll through M1 and M2.

Thanks Chaps - plenty to go at next time I go down to the boat.

I have checked the set was on international - but if it reverts to US everytime it is switched off then !!!!!!!

I haven't tried M2 as Navico told me to select 80 + E from the numeric pad (just like anyother channel) - when I transmit the TX indicator comes up which Navico said meant the set was transmitting fine - but nobody hears me. I have even sat in the Marina office listening on 80 as my wife called and the only thing I heard was her call via the mobile link we had open.

Regarding dozy marinas - I was on the East Coast of Ireland last week and not a single marina responded to calls on any of the channels listed in REEDs or my pilot book. Some I phoned and they said there was nobody there who could do anything and the others all seemed to have gone home at 17:00. In the end I just went where I wanted and waited to see if they found me in the morning!

Re: Simrad RD68 doesn\'t work on Ch 80

I think your problem is the fact that you are using International CH 80 which is a Duplex Channel where as M2 is channel 80 Simplex. so try using M2

Re: Simrad RD68 doesn\'t work on Ch 80

i think that your problem is that you are using CH80 international which is Duplex which you get from keypad. You want M2 which is also CH80 but Simplex and you have to go to Aux and select M2 it should work then.

UK channel M2 is simplex 161.425MHz.
Ch 80 is duplex, ship-shore 157.025, shore-ship 161.625
