Simpson Lawrence windlass "hand gear kit" - do you have this mysterious widget?

In the course of my windlass dismantlings (see other thread) I've discovered that I would need an extra gadget in order to be able to operate it manually should the electrical parts ever fail. This is described in the instructions as a "hand gear kit", and it looks like two winch handle sockets fixed together side by side, one of them able to rotate and the other not:

Simpson Lawrence Spares don't list it, though I have contacted them to ask if they can get one anyway. I thought I'd also post here in case a) someone has one on board but not the matching windlass, has always wondered what on earth it was for, and would be willing to sell it for a small fee, or b) someone knows where they can be obtained.

I have a lot of chain and a big anchor, and I don't relish the thought of raising it entirely manually, so I'd like to have the widget on board to convert my windlass to hand-crank operation if required.

Cheers,

Pete

Yes, I have one on board and possibly a spare, only trouble is I'm not out to the boat again for a few weeks and return back to UK around 9th August, if you still need one by then PM me and I will bring one back with me.....

Hi John - that's great. To be clear - you have one on board needed for your own windlass, plus possibly a spare which you'd be willing to sell? Or you definitely have at least one which is surplus to requirements?

How much would you want for it?

Cheers,

Pete

I'm pretty sure that I have two on board, unless I keep moving the same one around. If I have two you can have one of them for the cost of postage. I had to use it last year as one of the gears in the winch had seized, I removed and re-built it, I managed to free it up packed it with grease and re-fitted and it works great again. In fact better than the one I had on my newer Targa - I used the adapter quite a bit when it failed. The gear in question can jam if you don't use a strop when on the hook and slacken off a bit.

Great - thanks. In that case I'll stop trying to source one commercially - I haven't had any response from Simpson Lawrence Spares anyway. Fingers crossed, I'm unlikely to need it between now and early August, and in extremis there's always the old fallback of using a sheet winch along the side deck to pull in a few metres at a time.

Cheers,

Pete

Is this the tool/adapter that you need? If so I have located my spare and will bring it back to the UK, should be able to post to you on Monday:

Hi John, many thanks for looking.

Unfortunately I don't think this is quite the right part; it's the kit for a windlass with the rope drum whereas mine has just the gypsy. They're different in that the drum version slips over the driveshaft and is held in place by the nut that holds the drum down, whereas the gypsy version screws directly onto the thread on top of the driveshaft. That said, it's possible I could adapt it, and for the cost of postage it's worth a try. I'll send you my address; let me know what it costs to send, and some bank details, and I'll transfer it.

Cheers,

Pete
