I've just bought a new VHF to replace my Silva S10. ( the new one's got knobs on to make it easier to use than the menu-driven Silva)

For the last two seasons, it has effectively re-booted on several occasions asking me to enter my MMSI number when I've switched it on after a couple of dormant weeks. Sods law... now I want to sell it I find that it's fully live despite being off since November.

I understand the difficulties in changing an MMSI number and have seen the previous posts on this subject. Does anyone know the "code" for the silva S10? Or....Any ideas why it should have re-booted on previous occasions? Perhaps I could then replicate that.

Hopefully.... Gubbo /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Recommend you get the thread pulled. I posted similar some time ago and was "told off" for doing so! I just PM the details now if the request looks genuine. Apparently there are unscrupulous types out there who could use the info to help them re-sell such equipment after pinching it.

I wonder if that will work with my S10?

Being ignorant of the situation, when Santa delivered my new toy a couple of years ago I had to have a play with it. I had to put in something just to listen to the Coast Guard. Then when I did the DSC course I found I had to take the thing back to a dealer to get the number changed.

OK I deleted it, as it doesnt affect me but does others.

Not sure its that big an issue really.

It has been plastered all over the net.
How the hell do you think I got it?
I am not a Master Cracksman.

Same is true of resetting car alarms, car radios etc etc.

You can reset the DSC, the serial remains, if you can find anyone interested, esp Plod.

Still PM me, or read my forum

Hmm... very curious now. Just come back onto the forum to find potentially useful replies deleted amid a certain controversy.

I can understand the crime prevention aspects of the "one-time" mmsi entry, but if electronics manufacturers were that concerned then pin codes would be available on all gizmos (GPS, Radar, plotters, electronic instruments). I think the issue over abuse of the GMDSS system is a more valid concern. We've all heard of the chaos a muppet on the shore with a handheld can cause, so I shudder to think what a hoax DCS alert would cost in search and rescue terms.

If there is anyone out there who can assist with my original request, please PM me and I'll foreward some evidence that should hopefully reassure you I'm not a boat burglar

The whole thing is about as spurious as Region 1 & 2 DVDs.

I was told by manufacturer ... that the reason was international agreement to reduce errors and consequent mistakes in SAR operations. They were worried that if it was programmable more than once that people would as a guy admits above - put any old number in just to get a set working. They reckoned it had nothing to do with theft or local / national decision. It was international.

I know I wasn't convinced either. I happen to be one of those with podgy fingers and not unknown to press wrong or enter wrong letter / digit - I would like possibility to correct better than a one time entry system.

I cant see the point of the argument, if you take the set to someone to reset the number, do they check that it has been stolen or what ever? like hell they do, much as the bullshit with car radios, every swinging dick can reset them so what is the point, and hey, hands up those who actually use DSC by plugging in the numbers to call someone?
Stu
PS I phone Silva up today to see if I could get a new mike part, lovely scottish lady answered, Oh they are obsolete, in any case we dont sell marine accessories any more!

"hands up, etc."

Me sir, Me in the back row.
It saves all the ch16 public stuff and auto-sets the working channel, as well as ringing the bell.
Very civilised, once you discover your pals number.
Possibly a bit intrusive if you have one of those radios that uses the same alarm clamour for calls and alerts

I have an M55 vhf, bought secondhand, on here!! But I entered my MMSI wrong, somehow got channel 16 in there!! Anyway, I also need to know how to change it, but I´ve tried un-successfully to contact anybody at silva and its still wrong, Help!!!

Many thanks to all those who sent me the info regarding the Silva.

Your instructions work spot-on for the S10 as well. I found a "clear memory" option so the set now demands the new MMSI number at start-up and all directory entries are gone too. In fact... just like a new one.

Right... better take a photo for e-bay...
