Sorry, got a bit lost with the terms so poorly put even given the original topic

What I meant was that when the windlass is used as anchor winch (chain around the lower part the the drum -thing), is it possible to use the upper part (the drum) separately to tighten a rope. Ie. somehow switch off the chain part and only utilize the upper part?

I hope this makes sense but this is a genuine question.

I can let out spare chain, then move the chain out of the way of the chain cogs and then use the capstan on my princess but the chain can get caught in the cog at any time due to operational vibration so I dont recommend it. easier to take the anchor shackle off and let the chain go out of the way, rethread after use.
