HLS is the base coat and is fine by itself, filter 7 is a uv protective coat and I think it adds some shine like varnish. Use either or both, excellent stuff.

I've just applied 1 base coat of HLS then two top coats of Filter 7, that's what was recommended on the tin.

I liked the stuff but other posts here are starting to worry me now!!

I have been using HLS under Filter 7 on my Iroko for 4 years and the previous owner for at least 3 before me. I am very happy with it. However, although I now beleive you can get a clear variety, it was not available when I last bought mine. I use the "Pine" coloured one and, as long as you do not put it on too thick, will not make your wood look like pine. If you use the "teak" colour on teak it will make it look very dark indeed and I beleive it is this fact that has disapointed many users of Sikkens.
