Sikkens Cetol

Go for natural. I did all my teak brightwork this year and last and it lasts very well. Easy to use and brush out - I'm complete convert

Having studied the recent Classic Boat mag review of coatings I Put 3 coats of Sikkens Cetol novatech "teak" on my rubbing strake this winter. Very pleased with the result. From 6 ft it is difficult to see any difference with the 12-coats of varnish on the handrail. Preparation consisted of a quick scrub off with patio cleaner.

Re: Sikkens Cetol Supplier

Sikkes Cetol is about the best woodstain of it's type The "marine " stuff is identical to the" land based ".except for the tin..Expensive in the swindleries, but obtainable from your local Jewsons or from www.decoratingdirect.co uk. About half the price.

I am giving Cetol a try this year.

I have made a note of all those forumites who have said how good it is! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It is good stuff,Vic,but as I'm sure you know, preparation is vital to ensure a lasting finish. We find the best results are obtained by using the appropriate basecoat first, followed by the topcoat. The darker colours have better UV protection.

the appropriate basecoat first

[/ QUOTE ] Basecoat? No mention of basecoat on International's website or in the application instructions, how's anyone supposed to know about basecoats. Too frigging late now!

You should be ok.
I was very happy with the way it went, and I just slapped on three coats and left it at that.
If you are interested, I think the following pertains:
Novatech - Basecoat (Wot I used)
Novatop, Filter 7 - High build topcoats
HLS, HLS+ - Low build basecoats
They can all be used alone, or in tandem.

The marine version can be applied without any base coat - straight out of the tin two or three coats. The colour of the Sikkens out of the tin is very similar to varnish, and it dries with a slight sheen, almost a silk finish. There are a variety of versions for buildings and they often involve two preparations and 3 or 4 coats. I first used it 25 years ago on my house when I built it. We face SW a stones's throw from the sea and I have overcoated it only twice since. Great product and although the initial cost is high it repays over time.

Cetol Marine has changed about 5 years or more ago. It seems from former posts they have not read the can. After removing the old Cetol you need 2 coats of Cetol Marine Naturol Teak then 2 or 3 coats of Cetol Marine GLOSS. I have been using this paint for 3 years painting 2 coats Cetol Marine Gloss every 6 months in the Southern Caribbean and is stll looking like the new paint.
