i've been told never to use teak oil. the most you should be doing with teak is gently washing it down with soapy water (washing powder works well).

What's wrong with teak oil? Have just bought large bottle fom discount store for GBP 1.99 and intend to apply lavishly next weekend. Am I doing wrong? Usual grey weathered teak looks like something dug up from a grave. Cant see why people like it.

Not sure of the components of teak oil, but Sikaflex is a polyurethane elastomer. All elastomers are to some extent swollen by oils / solvents. If the sealant is coming out of its groove but still adhering, then you're seeing swelling (which is often reversible in time). If you'r seeing a loss of adhesion, that could also be due to swelling, but may also be an attack by the teak oil on the bond strength. That's more serious. It probably isn't a bad batch of Sikaflex, but an incompatibility issue (unless anyone knows different??). Have you asked Sika for their advice??

PS - just looked at the Sikaflex 291 datasheet. It says it has "good long term resistance to most teak oils"...sounds like there's teak oil and teak oil!! Perhaps that's where your problem lies?
