Hi

Just sold our boat and been looking for decent Sigma 362 for sale for ages. Wondered if anyone out there knew of any for sale or might suggest anything similar worth looking at.

Would really appreciate any help.

Thanks

Well, as I expect you know the 'ultimate' similar boat is the She 36, but they go for high prices and will quite likely require serious money on the rig & sails, very possibly the engine too; but I've only ever seen high praise for the design.

At Redcliffe YC on the River Frome there's a painting of She 36 'Lorelei' in the 1979 Fastnet where she and her crew did brilliantly rescuing people, with an inscription by her owner on the lines of ' she'll never let me down, in any weather '...

Not so sure about "Ultimate", think you may have missed out insignificant boats like a Starlight 35 or a Dehler 36 either of which are to be found in the same price bracket and with better accomodation. Either of which will show a clean pair of heels to the She or most anything else from the era !

The Starlight is a good boat, probably better for normal sailing and Solent bashing, but I'd be very surprised if that or a Dehler would be as fast or cope as well as a She in strong conditions.

I'm not a fan of Dehlers since chatting with the owner of one, he'd had a lot of structural snags like collapsing mast step & cockpit seats, and as he was talking another came in with a broken mast, it wasn't that windy so probably either bad luck or being silly.

The She's interior won't have about 5 double aft cabins and consequently a cockpit so shallow it's like being on stage like some modern boats, which is another plus in my book...

She 36 will be significantly cheaper than a Sigma 362. If you need decent accomodation then forget the SHE. Agree with potential for extra expenditure on the SHE as they tend to have been sailed hard - being a sailors yacht. Mind you, nice one on a mooring next to me but not for sale.

Dehlers are very quick. I used to race on both a DB1 and a DB2 (both IOR 3/4 tonners), which share the same hull as the CWS. These were raced extensively offshore, and well thought of. They don't have 5 aft cabins, in fact they struggle with 1.

However, the OP was asking about a Sigma 362. Not many for sale because they are liked. Same as the 38.

There is a Sigma 362 here and if you are interested in old bangers there's a She 36 here. :D Mind you they go up in £20k jumps from the She at 30k to the Sigma at 50K and a Starlight would cost you 70 to 80k.

Why not have a look at a First of the same era as the Sigma?

Not all Sigma 38s were thrashed and there are a lot more of them about than 362s. 38 will have better sails, more gear, and a lot more space as well as performance.
I spent 12 years with one and still get pangs of regret at my decision to sell her

we also very keen on 362 - but - when searching for one (and this was years ago) never found one that was in as good as condition as we wanted and all had volvo 2003 which (having had several volvos) we would put up with but not choose - so what did we buy - Dehler 34 - bought ours in holland and looked at several over a weekend and each of them was - compared to the sigmas we had searched for in uk - excellent

having said that no doubt in my mind if we had found a good un (362) especially a wing keel version it would have been our boat of choice!

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. Have been looking at a couple in Holland via internet and are also now considering Dehler 36 CWS. Would settle for a Sigma 35 also but again these seem to be as rare as hens teeth.

Any further suggestions most welcome.

Rival 34. 36 and 38 for sale here. All good sea boats and if the price is right worth a look. Not as small inside as some would believe. Many have been refitted and are still going strong. Not from the same stable as the yachts you are interested in. However, I have experience of a 362 and many of the Rival sizes and to be honest the 362 is not that great on the accommodation front.

Anyway, something for you to consider, and as I said, not from the same school.

Sigma 35: very few of these were built, but they are fast and good looking (Humphries design?).

Dehler 36 CWS: If budget permits, suggest you look at the later 37CWS instead. Although it's basically the same hull, there are a lot of improvements over the 36. Notable is the sail handling, with the single central electric winch on the 36 being replaced with 2x coaming electric winches on either side of the wheel/binnacle (which is also much improved). This makes singlehanding a piece of cake.

In the picture (of a 35CWS, but it's almost identical to the 37CWS) one wich is at the top of the picture and the port hand one is just out of shot below.

Note that the wheel is mounted ahead of the binnacle with curved spokes.

As the OP seems to desire a performance boat - so Rival 34's & Najads are out, lovely as they may be for their purposes - how about a UFO 34 ?

Quite a few were built, a lot being kits which is not necessarily a bad thing, some are immaculately well done.

There are boats like the Tartan as well, and how about the Waquiez boats like the Centurion, or maybe even Swans ?
