Sigma 36 vrs She 36

Doris,

fair enough, maybe my view is coloured after hearing from the transatlantic berks, and a chum who crewed a 33 racing inc a Fastnet when they had a fair few breakages.

I'm sure the Sigma is fine for general sailing, but going up against a She 36 will be tough for any boat !

Now that is interesting, I suppose you would not be willing to say what boat your chum was on or even approximately which year. I still have all my old Sigma yearbooks so could probably tell you the result.

I know good design and build quality when I see it, I'm a qualified engineer and sailor, how about you ?
urm..... David Thomas has a very fine reputation as a designer.

A lot of Sigmas have done a LOT of miles without breaking, so I think the accusations are a bit misguided.

I love the She 36, but i'd never denigrate one of the most successful boats of the period... having sailed a 33, they're a blast!

PS... i'm a qualified engineer too.

My chum the late Peter Blower was crew on a Sigma 33 called something like 'Aka II'.

I have no idea of the name of the Sunsail boat which pulled up 6' of the windward deck, she was never named and it was a long time ago, I'm hoping they employ a better standard of berk now though I still reach for my camera and or fenders and go to at least 'yellow alert' whenever I see anyone from that lot approaching.

Please advise me of your boat name or appearance, and you'll also get the full fender treatment if approaching.

How kind, but it unlikely I will ever go within a mile of you; the current one is a Finngulf 33, wee bit prettier than an Anderson 22, almost as good a sailer, and it has a proper rig and side decks. Really an update on the Sigma 33 but by a different designer.
The Sigma 33 owners association listed all known owners and I can not see Sunsail among them but then perhaps you are now claiming it was a 36 and that is a bit harder to check but I have contacts who go back to the Northney yard who will be glad to do it for me when I tell them what you are putting about on a public forum as if it were fact. I am determined to put your unsupported second and third hand fantasies to rest. These are robust boats as everyone on here who knows anything about them has been at pains to tell you.
There is bound to be a Sigma near you, why not ask the owner to let you see it, if you got aboard you could try to work how the deck came off without the rig coming down and explain it to us from first hand knowledge, rather than hearsay from guys you yourself have happily described as idiots. It would be more useful than wasting your time trying to spread scurrilous stories on here about boats you know nothing about. I notice that this kind of trolling it is a hobby off yours, looking at the frequent postings on every thread there is nothing you think you do not know about. Perhaps time to grow up a bit, it would do wonders for your credibility.

Akka II K4472 two owners listed mid 80s with contact details, but it does not appear to be very successful in the results for the years I have looked at so far., I can get its history checked out for you, if it 'sustained serious breakages' in the Fastnet it will have lost its rig so that will be recorded.

To answer you other question, No I am not a 'qualified engineer,' I have never even been on a footplate, but unlike you I have been on a Sigma. But I have owned maintained and raced on a lot of different boats over the years and understand construction and how to set up a rig. However, my son who crews on the Sigma 33 which won the National Championships again this year does have a masters degree in structural engineering, would that do?

Don't beat around the bush - just say it as it is.

Yes, its raining again so trawling not trolling - as if I would:D

didn't want to get dragged in again, but....

Quandary

You keep saying that Seajet told a story about a Sigma 33 and then it was a Sigma 36. I looked at the thread and as far as I can see it was a 36 all along. We need a link to the thread where he said it was a 33.

Otherwise this is just like where you implied he was making it up about his friend who crewed a Sigma, and then it turned out he wasn't.

Also, I'm going to repeat the second hand story I heard about a Sigma 36.

A racing sailor at a local dinghy club told me that he was in the middle of a race on one and the wheel steering broke, causing a crisis.

I'm afraid you can't stop people saying that kind of stuff, however unfair it seems.

Quasimodo,

you asked for a detailed reply, now I've given it you can only fall back on meaningless insults, your 'owners log' is clearly wrong - talking of mid 1980's and my chum who I've sailed 10's of thousands of miles with was an instructor for Sunsail while at Emsworth, long before Port Solent was even built - I note even you admit your boat doesn't sail as well as an Anderson 22.

I suggest you quit while you're behind. :)

You mean that you expect me to read all Seajets posts again, that would be a really unfair form of purgatory.
Odd that when I contradicted him, he himself said he could not remember, but it did not matter because they were both by the same designer. I certainly do not share his disdain for David Thomas who has done as much as any to advance British yacht building with various builders. Same with Marine Projects who built both the Moodys and Sigmas in Plymouth. I have been closely involved with Sigmas for 25 years now and I still believe his story was made up, either by him or the 'idiots' he heard it from. (his term not mine, I have not even called HIM an idiot yet) What baffles me is why he feels it necessary to post negatively on subjects which by his own admission he knows absolutely nothing about. If you were a 'qualified engineer' would you give a report without any inspection? I have never suggested that Sigmas are perfect, just that they are good and very robust, the steering pedestal on my 38 needed attention once, if I had left it could have led to failure but that was a Cobra set up, installed but not manufactured by Marine Projects.
Anyway I am away now to watch some big Welshmen try to kick the **** out of some Argies.

Isn't this a lovely thread. Those dropping in by accident might be astonished to find some posts about sailing.
Surely "adults" trading insults at each other should go and do so elsewhere. How about the Lounge?

I agree and have requested the thread goes back to its' subject, other losers seem determined not to...

Oops I've said it again; please let's talk about She and Sigma 36's, and would anyone calling me a liar care to meet me face to face instead of being brave on the internet ?
