Sigma 33 viable for single handed cruising?

Going forward quickly may not happen often but the less rapid need often arises for things like storm jibs, anchors, at mast reefing, mooring pick-up, spinnaker work, etc.
When Solo 'Going forward quickly' should never be considered, it's normally a result of Pish Poor Planning!
an unfettered route out of the cockpit is a good thing.
Yep, and out of the saloon. Pilot house / Deck saloon are good in that respect as less steps to get out (three in my case). Getting out of the cockpit is made safer and easier with extra strategically placed grab handles.

Nevertheless, it happens, so you might as well make it easy.

KS was great for this, the cabin top is quite high so made a sturdy handhold on the inboard side, while the runner tackles come down to the gunwale in just the right place to provide a handhold on the other side as you came out of the cockpit and started to go along the deck. Most of the boats I've been on while looking for her replacement have felt rather exposed at that point by comparison.

The one we ended up with has a Swedish-style windscreen at the front of the cockpit, so I'm going to try to arrange some handles on the outside top edge of it.

I'm intrigued! What's so terrible about it? I've had a look at the Yachtsnet archive, and working within the limited space it's hard to see what could have been done much better. Is that not a standard example, or is there something I've missed?

No, that is the standard layout showing the clever arrangement where the worktop over the cooker slides back to stow vertically behind it. My racing crew (of seven) expected the motivational gesture of a full English together on deck on the second morning of overnight races and I always managed it though there were sometimes traces of egg yolk on the charts. I suppose it depends on what one is used to, after a 26' Trapper 300 it seemed like luxury to us.
