sigh sigh sigh .. we're racing!

Re: sigh sigh sigh .. we\'re racing!

On the other hand some cruising may be under more serious time pressure than racers .. there may be a tidal gate to hit ... a pub time to catch ... and having to sail all the way around a fleet sailing a course on a fairway would be seriously inconvenient. Its let and let live and I hope you are not condoning such behaviour. FWIW I was not complaining about having to give way .. I was complaining about:

The unecessary shouting & abuse .. unforgiveable .. and I've a long memory for peeps that upset me unnecessarily!

and commenting on their racing incompetence

The fact they could'nt tell whether they were going to pass ahead or behind when it was obvious to a half blind idiot like myself that not only were they going to pass well behind but that it was tactically to their advantage to go behind me and let me screw up the guy behind them.

Re: sigh sigh sigh .. we\'re racing!

I think everyone has misread what I meant in my post as I wasnt condoning it all - just saying that there are 2 sides to the discussion and that previous bad experiences effect peoples attitude.
Cruisers who have been shouted at that no longer respect the racers and the racers that have had a cruising boat deliberately sail through a fleet are the ones that end up doing the shouting......

Re: sigh sigh sigh .. we\'re racing!

Think my perception may also be coloured by thae fact that last year I was nearly rammed twice in 10 minutes (having to take violent evasive action) whilst on starboard by the same boat on port tack participating in the same series. The idiots had'nt seen me the first time ( again in the middle of Soton Water a pretty busy waterway) and shouted they were racing the second time. I lodged a formal complaint at the time with the RSYC but got the impression it was treating it fairly lightly .. if any incidents like this happen again I'll complain again to the RSYC and copy it to the RORC and the RYA.

Width

So you're the guilty one, then. Put a picture of that width into the thread, and the whole thread expands to the same width, making it almost unreadable. Mind you, I can sympathise with you on seeing that many dinghies. Or were they in a nice little corner of their own, not interfering with anyone?

Re: sigh sigh sigh .. we\'re racing!

Copy it to the Harbour Authority as well. If you get an inadequate answer from the club, then copy that to the authorities.

Re: sigh sigh sigh .. we\'re racing!

When TC was hit I got in my dinghy and stormed into the sailing club to complain. The marshal was out erm marshalling. But I did get a phone call later on to apologise. Had this not happened I would have contacted the RYA and lodged a full and colourful complaint. I did take sail numbers.

I also had to whinge about a couple of powerboats who were passing me at high speed within a few meters. The harbour master went to the slipway following my complaints to reprimand them. One of them contacted me later to apologise and did accept he was coming too close, but offered an excuse that he thought there was no-one on board. ho hum.

It is a shame really, as I will prolly never visit Aberdovey again.

Aw Shut Up

You crack me up - you only go out when people are racing so that you can get shouted at then come bleating here - I remember the windward rail harridan from last year. Change your job, change your sailing area - take up pogo stick leaping or yogic flying - but stop blethering on about all those silly sods in the solent - you're getting as bad as Dick Durham and all that bloody nonsense about the Swatchways.

Re: sigh sigh sigh .. we\'re racing!

I'd add in, especially to dinghy sailors
My rudder is smaller in proportion to my boat than yours and requires a certain amount of prop wash to make its effects rapid. I can go really slowly _or_ manoeuvre quickly. This effect is exacerbated by being before wind and/or current.
Your centreboard comes up. My shaft, prop and rudder don't.
I'll assume that you plan to round the next mark fairly closely but will leave you as much room as I can. Please return the courtesy.

We live more in hope...

...than expectation! Our club one time set a dinghy course such that it crossed the 25m wide channel to our marina, using one of the channel buoys as a turn mark. We draw 2.08m and the channel has a minimum 2.0m but dries either side.. There was even one 'fun' race that ended on the slipway inside the marina. Unaware of this we politely said to some youngsters in a dinghy following us in 'please don't get too close behind, we will be turning into our berth and there will not be room for you to pass' - reply 'oh but we are racing!' Dinghies rule OK seems to be taught from birth, commonsense is seemingly optional!

Re: Aw Shut Up

You wouldn't know a swatchway if one bit you. Dick Durham only tacks when the sounder says 0.1, and he's a big wossie. Round here we run aground before we tack.

and that, folks, was 2000.
Edited by JohnM on 02/11/2004 21:45 (server time).

Re: Aw Shut Up

Go on then - pray illuminate - how exactly do you tack if you run aground. Up here if you run aground you dont tack because you are stuck fast - possibly listening to the sound of inrushing water - how do wussies do it then?

Re: Aw Shut Up

You know that expression, 'did the earth move for you?' It originates in Essex. In fact, we love mud so much we won't even start sailing unless we're aground. We have good sides to go aground and bad sides to go aground. Good times to go aground and better times to go aground. Aground... it's really... real. By the way did I mention the swatchways?

Re: Aw Shut Up

Ooh! Finally a raggie post I can respond to . Was out racing on a corporate do. Excellent skipper on board. Got cut up by a tanker so had to gybe and lost 3rd place and went back to 7 ish.

As part of plan to make up position, this guy knew Solent like back of hand. Warned it wouldn't work unlesswe did best tack of day. As we just touched ground, barely, he yelled 'about' and we did. Keel lifted, and off we went to finish line. Never did get back to3rd place though!. 2 boats followed cos they knew how good skipper was, and went aground.
