Thanks for all the suggestions, situation as follows - I cleaned out the carb, fuel tank etc, old plug set to .035"(approx - feeler gauges on boat...), fresh mixed petrol(checked plug lead but cannot replace as engine end is sealed) and lo & behold it started after 3-4 pulls! It was not running perfectly, idled OK but was hesitant on acceleration & high speed, seemed to prefer ½ choke. There was a small air leak at the crankcase split line, but I stopped and started it several times OK. I will check if it is still running tonight, and will strip down and lap the split line faces(or might just try Hermetite).

If its weak on pick up, its prob mixture too lean.. However on all 2strokes if there is a leak of pressure from the bottom end it will give similar symptoms.. good luck
Nick ( Is the plug gap really 35 thou ?)

Nick,
According to S-O-S (www.saving-old-seagulls.co.uk - very useful website) - and my handbook which I eventually found, plug gap is 35 thou on the early CD ignition units. I've stripped it and resealed the crankcase split line but not had a chance to test it yet(neighbour says it wakes their kids after 10.30 at night!...)

Funnily enough just buzzing back from the boat today thinking how nice it was to now have a Yamaha 2hp that always starts 1st pull..... And it stopped!!

Started and stopped a few times more, and then I rowed.... Looks depressingly just like all the old Seagul stuff.

Oh well nice while it lasted.

Nick,
Go back to a proper Seagull - you know it makes sense - Want to buy a nice refurbished Seagull?? only £65 runs very nicely now, had it running for an hour last night in the water butt - no problem.

I already got one! It hangs on a bracket in the garage next to the Yam.... trouble is that either the Seagul has infected the Yam with some sort of O/B virus, or they have been talking...

Thing is that my SG will run for hours in the tub just like yours, but get it anywhere near the back of a dinghy and "Oh dear out with the oars"

Regds Nick
