Shroud tang stud: peen, loctite, or nyloc nuts?

I need to replace the 5/16" stud that holds the lower shroud tangs on my Westerly Pageant's mast. At each end, there's a nut. The original stud was peened to prevent the nuts from coming undone. I am hesitant about attempting to peen the replacement stud because it's not a technique I have experience with and it seems quite brutal!

How do others on the forum deal with securing the nuts on a shroud tang stud? Would you use red loctite, nyloc nuts, peening, or some other technique?
 
I would never consider Loctite of any designation. Red is supposed to be the 'near permanent' version ... but not for me thanks.

I would trust a nyloc before Loctite .. but that's my personal view.

My preferred way would be to drill the stud and use a castellated nut with split pin. That way - its always easy to dismantle if ever needed.
 
My experience with blue Loctite is pretty good, especially on anchoring gear where I have done some testing. However I agree that a castellated nut and split pin is the most secure method provided the sail cannot be torn by it.

I use 'Blue' on anything that I will be dismantling .... such as my RC motor mounts etc. As its not a permanent version.
 
Nyloc nuts can lose their securing polymer through frequent usage. The underlying message for the Aerotite nuts is that they can be frequently re-used (in comparison with other 'locking systems' aka Nylon?). Red Loctite is so secure that if used correctly will need heat, blow torch, to release. Both blue and red Loctite can be applied and then immediately immersed in sea water without any detriment to the strength of the bond. Volvo supply tubes of a Loctite type product (blue) - probably Loctite with a Volvo label , to secure recessed Alan key bolts on their props.
