Hi,

As a retired couple, we wish to buy and live aboard a 50 to 60 foot TSDY. We would like to spend the summers cruising "on the hook" and spend the winters in a marina. The boats we are considering are fully equipped with baths and showers. Our problem is that all of the marina sites we have looked at online offer shower facilities, but the thought of trudging to the showers in the middle of winter is not appealing. We would like to find out if it is possible to have a shower onboard while in the marina. We understand the difference between black and grey water; do any marinas in the UK allow grey water to be discharged over the side? Some of the boats we have looked at even have washing machines and dishwashers. Do any marinas allow these to be used? To us, being able to shower, do laundry, and wash dishes on board would be the difference between living comfortably and "roughing it" and will greatly influence whether we decide to do this or not. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

I have never met a marina that didn't allow grey water discharge. The ban may be coming in a few countries but no prospect of it here yet. Even the inland waterways allow it.

You can happily shower aboard in marinas -- although one chap I knew had a ticking off from the marina manager after he had a bubble bath and when he pumped out the water the marina was totallycovered in foam!

My wife and I have a shower on board but we still make use of teh marina facilties three times out of five -- showering even with really effective ventilation can add water vapur to the boat, and it also uses quite abit of water -- before we fitted the shower we filled our tanks every two week, now its once a week!

We have about 450 litres of water onboard, we could probably do with a little more -- make sure your new boat has lots of water (and fuel) tankage.

All the best,

Nick

We are about a third of the way through the Med. and have a good shower on board and washing machine, we have been using them both in all the Marinas in France,Spain the Islands and Portugal without a problem. I don't like using marina showers. In the winter while alongside we run a dehunidifier onboard to handle the damp, pumped out by the shower.
