Filling a bucket when underway?
Chuck it - head down so it fills quickly - ahead of where you are standing.
Haul in on the lanyard and get it clear of the water before it comes abreast of where you are standing.
Simples.
That's exactly as I was taught as a lad by the barge skipper

And not just Barge skippers, my grandfather taught me this, almost the first thing he did when we went sailing almost 70 years ago.

I have a heavy old rubber bucket that is relatively small . I think it would sink if I let go of the lanyard

Should you happen to be on a modern yacht with a sugar scoop transom, the water retrieval technique needs adjusting.....

But you can also dangle your feet in the sea.
