Show us your wake shot !

Nope. 45+ Gallons an hour.

Depending on where you buy your fuel, I reckon it'll be nearer £300 per hour.

That would make your raggies cry into their drink.

Bloke on the next pontoon to me has got 2 x 300hp Verados on his 10 metre Cougar.

Fuel consumption on that would make your raggies cry into next week :-)

I rented a little mobo a couple of years ago in France. It had a 150hp outboard and we went through £180 of fuel in the half day, or however long it was. It wasn't the cost which bothered me - it was the boredom. Being able to go whereever the bow pointed at whatever speed I wanted was just dull, and I wish we'd only booked it for an hour. I find singlehanding my tiny trailer sailer so much more mentally stimulating, I can sail her all day and never get bored - which is my primary driver.

I don't think I will ever "get it" Raggie see, heads elsewhere. I might be wrong, but I think the people here abouts with high speed power boats, possibly see them as little different to a high speed car? For them, it's about arriving, and doing whatever they do when they get there...
To put it another way, is the high speed motor boat, akin to a high speed car when at sea, and akin to a holiday home with all the facilities you would have in same, when arriving at the marina?

For similar money, I could have a sailing yacht with more space down below, and more "facilities", so that isn't a difference.
And as for speed, if that were the ultimate goal, then we'd all be strapping ourselves into USA style "go fast" boats capable of 70kts plus. Most cruisers, with the exception of Cookee and the Hunton brigade seem to be happy bimbling along between 20 and 30 kts. Semi-D, more like 15kts.

But take Newtown Creek as an example, which is my favourite tranquil spot. "What I do when I get there" is either to walk along the riverbank, or turn the engine off on the tender and be blown by the breeze to wherever it may take me.

It's 23 miles from where I am. In Flower Power, that's a little over an hour each way if the water is reasonably flat. A 10am start gets me there comfortably in time for an early lunch, and a few hours bobbing around in the tender or walking.

In a sailing yacht, 23 miles is going to take, something like 4 hours at 6kts (is that a reasonable speed? not sure), and it could be a lot more if the tide is going the wrong way. So my day becomes 8 hours of "getting there and back", which is a lot, however much I am enjoying the ride.

But the above does nothing really to explain WHY some people go to so much trouble to run a planing powerboat, and I don't think I can help much. But, try and imagine, after weeks of fettling engines, knowing that everything mechanical is the way it should be, starting up, listening for any odd noises, trundling up the fairway, watching the gauges until the engines warm up, then in the open sea, feeling the superchargers kick in at 1500rpm with a bit of a whine, the boat rises out of the water, you throttle back a little, apply trim tabs to keep things level. 20 kts. You can see for miles in all directions with nothing to obstruct your view. The wind is in whatever is left of your hair: You're a motorboater.

Nope, high speed MoBos are akin ONLY to high speed cars - if that.
Surely not to holiday homes, anyway.
You must have never seen one, I reckon - let alone tried.
If so, how can you say whether you "get it" or not...

With apologies to anyone annoyed by the o/t! :)

I'm guessing this thread is for showing off big, frothing wakes?

Is that it? :D:D:D Dear me, surely you gents could try harder...now, on our duck-pond last week...

Agreed and as per usual this thread has gone bonkers and well out of hand well..

Today I was out with three chaps the first did, 10K, the second 8k and the third does not have a price for repairs yet... but I guess thats competitive sailing for you...oh and then they took 15 out for lunch AND dinner...

There are still some that argue motoboating is like throwning 50 quid notes over the side...they should try serious sailing...

It's a shame that some peeps take the hump when others are enjoying them selves and like to show it, to those that take exception or cannot understand why others do what they do, bear in mind that we don't always travel at high speeds and some times we do go quite slow!

If I am in no rush and the sea state is flat I often travel at below 10kts but then like the last time I was out it was persisting down and blowing a bit so I wanted to get home so I traveled at 27kts, it's nice to have the choice!

the kind of motor boating that is demonstrated in the photos on this thread.

Why do you choose to deliberately misconstrue? Other than one humerous photoshop joke, all the photos I have looked at show boats planing in open water, causing inconvenience and danger to no one. As said above your over reaction is unfortunately only too typical.[/QUOTE]

Yes but when one baits and gets a response a simple 'Bob it's a joke old chap' instead of the humiliating comment by yourself would indeed help to repair the divide between mobo's and yotties.

the mobo/yottie divide on this thread was opened up by yotties - I merely reacted.
I have no problem of ANY kind whatever with yotties, other than that THEY have a problem with me because I turn up with engines.

I love this tread.......
Lots of great pictures interspersed with lively debate, bit of humour, all we need now is a love interest and perhaps a murder?
Could be a best seller....

sweeping statement! I enjoy motor boaters, and always wave when out to their surprise sometimes. I don't mind rafting to them if it wast for the totally different action whilst moored in a bumpy harbour.

Oh searush, sometimes you try so hard to join in and be part of the mobo forum , even posting photos of your boat without the sails up but you just dont get it do you :D

(not meant as a serious post , you fit in better than me !) ;)

Well I don't get it that's for sure, I have waded through all the pages on this thread, and I still can't see what you are all exited about? Don't take my post the wrong way and get all defensive, I fully accept that it takes all sorts and there is room on the water for everybody, I would just kind of like to get a handle on what you all seem to think is interesting / entertaining, about the wake from a motor boat?:) Could somebody please explain it to me?

Could somebody please explain it to me?

In the 1970's Dad used to take the car ferry "Patricia" to Bilbao. I was the kid leaning on the rear railing, staring for hours at the wake the ship made, watching the colours change at different time of the day...

Fast forward 40 years: SWMBO is on the helm, and the same big kid is staring at the wake that FlowerPower is making as we return to port.

Could somebody please explain it to me?

nope.

they're always a bit rubbish in photos too. But get the boat trimmed right and it just feels good.

you know the photo you take down the lee rail when pushing hard on a beam reach? White water over the decks :) That makes a bit of a rubbish photo too. Same thing really, you either get it or you don't.

doesn't matter if you don't, as long as you don't mind if others do.......
