I just fitted some nice new white 38MM dia hose to my bog,i had to heat the ends up in hot water to get them on the anti syphon valve, but the hose easily slipped onto the blakes seacock and the toilet connection, the boat is on the hard at the moment. it doesnt seem to offer any resistance now when i pump with the seacock closed like it did with the old hose.it emties the bowl of water without leaks but i am worried about the seacock end leaking when i am back afloat.

Any ideas?

The old hose was green.
 
Pumping a bowl of water overboard when on the hard shouldn't offer any significant resistance. I reckon your old hose was bunged up with limescale :)

Got two decent jubilee clips on each joint? If they're done up nice and tight you should be fine. And if there is something wrong, you can always close the seacock to fix it.

Yes all done up tight with two nice new ss clips on each end, the resistance was felt with the seacock closed, that doesnt happen now.:confused:
 
I was surprised to find this when I replaced a hose. I refitted it with sikaflex. When I removed it a few seasons later the sikaflex came off easily, so refitted new pipe in the same way with sikaflex. Not sure which type but was in small tubes in chandlery.

Thanks, thats a good idea.

l'escargot...will try that before the sika, but it was a very loose fit.

i should have explained earlier that i have just serviced the seacock by grinding it with paste and then greasing it. wonder if that has anything to do with it?

Hair driers are wonderful for heating hoses. Much better than hot water, provided you have mains power. With the hair drier, you heat the fitting as well as the hose.

Not sure I am quite understanding this. The toilet bowl empties when pumped, with the discharge seacock closed? With no leaks into the boat? Where is the water going?

In the past I have found new hose to be a rattling fit on Blakes seacocks. Very heavy wire reinforced hose is difficult to get tight on the nozzle, but lighter non-reinforced ones seal well.

Silly question perhaps but did you always have the anti syphon valve or has this just been fitted. If the valve is new then I am sure it will draw in air.

Sorry vyv, let me clarify, its a dry bowl toilet and pumps out as normal with the seacock open, but with the seacock closed if i pump the water stays put and there is no, or very little resistance on the pump handle,i was checking for leaks after i serviced the cock and put the new pipes on, the old system was solid if pumped with the seacock closed.
 
Keep filling the bowl while pumping out with the seacock closed - eventually you should fill the discharge pipe with water and teh pump should go "hard" if not check for leaks - easy to find this time as you should be able to see the water leak - not so easy with an air leak. As an extra aid dose the water for filling the bowl with drain tracing dye.
Is it possible the water is leaking back into the inlet side of the pump and discharging through the intake pipe?

That sounds as if it might be an issue with the pump if the water is staying put - what sort of pump/toilet is it?

do you know, after 3 years of owning the boat i cant remember the make, but its a "drybowl"type, but yes the pump being nacked has crossed my mind,i am off to the boat now, and today i am in a more positve bog fixing mode.
