My Azimut 37 is currently out of the water in Genoa. I think we’ve ‘done’ Italy now and quite fancy spending this winter in the South of France. It’s due back in at the end of September so what’s the likelihood of getting a 12m winter berth (say, till April) in any marina near Nice airport? As always, I'm on a budget.

What's your beam?

Shame - you're just too big for my berth (which might be available) at Port Vauban.

The rental prices for the marinas nearish the airport are all much the same - St Laurent du Var will have the best availability, and is about a 30 min walk from the airport. You'll probably also get into Baie des Anges. At your beam you'd need a 15x5 at PV, which might make it too expensive.

Shame there's no 12m rate at Vauban as the 15m berths are a bit pricey at 744euros/month (+water and electric by the looks of it)
The cheapest price on a website that I can see is Port Gallice at 3,266 for 6 months (including electric/water I think)
Perhaps I'll just turn up in the area with the boat in early October and ask around?

Turning up is definitely the right thing to do. Gallice is nice and I found the capitanerie there very pleasant to deal with when I was first looking here. However it's not that easy to get to from the airport, it's a 70-80 euro cab ride, or a longish walk iirc from juan les pins station. Renting a car would be best option if you're staying longer than a weekend.

Beaulieu is easy on the train, as is antibes and baie des anges (villeneuve loubet) - altho fyi nice st augustin station is a 15 min walk from the airport, give or take.

Of course in the Cote d'Azur there is no wind. So not much sailing.

Further west in the Golf de Lion, there is either no wind, so not much sailing, or far too much (Tramontana), so often holed up in a anchorage or marina somewhere because you want to go North and bashing against the waves, either with heavily reefed sails (not much VMG there), or with the motor flat out (only slightly more VMG there) is damm uncomfortable. So in the end not as much sailing as you might hope.

However, in a big enough boat heading downwind towards Spain with a decent Tramontana can be very pleasant and exhilarating. Just that coming back again afterwards is not much fun.

You would be low season and then they charge by the day regardless of length of stay. Pick your pricing band and stay multiplying.

Less than 12 m and narrower than 4.3 m then €15.75 a day and no charge for electricity.

No they are not. I am berthed there. I arrived 10 March for the year and was charged as I have highlighted. X days at Y based on boat size for both high and low season dates.

From 1 Jan I will go to the annual rate.

Still if you know something I don't do tell me as I would hate to be paying too little.

So when they kick you out because the owner wants his berth back...... What then tonto?

Beaulieu is slightly different to the other SoF marinas in that you don't get a lease on a specific berth, you buy shares that give you the right to a non-specific berth of a certain size. So the owner can't kick you out of 'his' berth because that concept doesn't exist there.
