Should I keep my old canopy?

I am currently having a new canopy made for my boat.

I don't know why but I am loath to throw the old one away - will it be any use to me in the future or just take up scarce storage space at home?

Should I keep the old one and if so why?

I did think that for a while.
The old one is still usable but has a few gaps in it that let the rain in and the plastic windows are nearly opaque making it difficult to see out!
I think maybe the new one should be the winter canopy?

Agree with summer/winter split. It's a bit depressing to see the state a nice/clean canopy gets in after a couple of winter months! Mine started grey, and is now mostly green!

My newish canopy is in the loft clean and dry ready for Easter weekend

old one is on the boat going green

all change soooon

Yup we too have a disreputable canopy on the boat now for the winter. You can actually clean the windows yourself using stuff for cleaning cabriolet windows for cars - get it fron Halfords - don't pay for a marine product. Also have the winter canopy restitched or repared in the areas it is leaking - Should not cost too much. Your new canopy will now last twice as long!

I should keep it.

I once heard someone dropped a side piece in the water in Bristol and it sunk, lost forever.

You never know you may need it for spares

It was on a similar boat to yours.

.... Runs for cover.... :-(

....and if you find a cheap cover maker but he is miles away, you can courier your old un to him for a pattern and keep the boat dry with the other,in additon it will still have the holes for studs etc in situ.

WHO! Pi55 off!

Thanks to everyone else for the input :-)

Think I'll chuck it 'cos it is knackered - hope the new one lasts for 10 years - The one on the boat is original 2002 and spent most of it's life in the South of France, do they shrink in the sun?

I would keep them but that is my view. I was going for a new set to but found out today the current set should last at least another season with a bit of repair. Happy days.

Oh who has been dropping things over the side again?????

Good to see OG participating in a sports boats issue.......:)

Could this be seen as a degree of mellowing....:D

For the record, I dropped just one piece of the canopy into the water just once.
It only sank once and I only had to pay one £100 to have it replaced, just the once ;-)

Mymobo - Ours needed replacing when we bought the boat 21/2 years ago so probably worth hanging on to yours for another winter whille you save up some money.

For the record the new one is £1750

That includes mozzie type fly screens and millions of zips to give various conotations. (?)

Starting to save for an Eber now!

Edited due to **** spelling!

This thread has really made me chuckle. Well done WHO, and thanks. Cheered up a dismal Friday.

For what it's worth, I am going to replace my canopy, and keep the old one for Winter. A sister boat to mine ripped its canopy due to snow in January. Less painful on an old one.

Could this be seen as a degree of mellowing....Na......More sympathy for the afflicted.

Sooner or later when your bum gets fed up with that bash bash ride from the hull, yer fillings bring loosened by the crash and bang speeds and yer bonce being dripped on from above via the leaky canvas and whats left inbetween being frozen by the elements.....
A nice set of patio doors awaits.:)

We went through this a couple of years back and had a tonneau cover made for the winter and chucked the old cover. My attic is full of stuff which 'might' come in handy (if only I could remember whats up there) so I've taken a grip and now am chucking more stuff away and not cluttering my life with old tat.

Last year I kept my old canopies fully intending to use them again for the winter/summer split, but after a couple of months taking up space in the shed I gave into SWMBO and skipped them.

A week later a friend at the marina asked if he could borrow the old canopies temporarily while he was having his repaired. Murphy's Law.
