I ordered replacement a GM batteries but was surprised that when they arrived the manufacture date was February 2015. during that time they had not been charged by the dealer and the voltage when I tested them was under 12 volts. I am expected to pay the full price for the batteries should I take them but wonder whether I should. the voltage may increase from a charge but I wonder if the capacity might have been reduced by this prolonged idleness. it does not help that I am in turkey where there is limited choice especially for agm batteries

AGMs are less prone to sulphation than lead acid, but almost a year and a half; that's pushing it! I personally wouldn't accept them, especially as AGMs aren't cheap in the first place.

I would not accept them either.

And I'd not buy from the same source again .... hopefully not one of the major players often recommended on the Forums

Absolutely not.
Should be recharged 6 monthly (at least) in storage, and losses are worse at raised temperature.
OCV under 12 is much too low, damage - lost capacity - is virtually certain.
At 18 months old you have lost life even if correctly maintained.

thanks for comments - i cancelled order. then tried another well known German brand only to discover their agm batteries were 15 months old. importer not prepared to order new stock until shevrs are clear of old stock so teluctantly gone ahead with sealed service batteries from same supplier. at least these are only 3 months old
