It is important to remember that there are different types of brass used for skin fittings too. Admirality brass is really no where near up to the job but DZR (De-zincification resistant) brass is perfectly acceptable to use in sub marine applications thanks to the composite nature of it.
Normally underwater metals that fail are more to do with uncontrolled electrolytic action under the water from leaky shorepower, large lumps of metal etc etc. As people with bronze skin fittings have found out this kind of thing can cause them to fail within weeks never mind years or months.
Most production builders use DZR brass so do their bit to keep us floating.
