The Shielmartin is a wooden boat, designed by J.B. Kearney.

She was bought in England, brought to Ghent, and stripped internaly for some major overhaul.

But, as happened all too frequently, halfway the project, the owner's family situation changed, and the project came to a halt.

Now there's this beautifull wooden hull just rotting away in some dock in the port of Ghent. I've seen her go from repair to restoration state, and is now all but lost.

The guy said he paid 15.000£ for her, and wants to see half of it before he parts with his boat. Even if you paid a million pounds for your mercedes, if you leave it in the woods with all the windows open for a few monts, you're not getting your 500 grand back.

Is there something like a RSPCA for boats to protect them from people who mistreat them ?

What a waste.

Makes you sick dont it .
Sounds like he would let it rot before letting some one take on the huge and very expensive task.
Mind you there are plenty about that have the same fate ,most yards have at least one in this sort of situation ,I got Privateer because of this sort of thing .After the greedy family members past away ,the widow had the common sence to just give it away. Hence no more costs for her .

Hey Kingfisher,

this is like the only bit of info we found on the net regarding the Shielmartin.
A group of friends recently purchased her from the person described on your post.

They are experienced woodworkers and committed to a thorough restauration.

If you could provide us with any additional info on the Shielmartin or her designer Kearney,we would much appreciate it.

kind regards
