Is a new edition due out soon? The current edition was published in 2009 so is based on information five or more years old.

Has TC been in to every harbour in the book recently, and hung out there to discover all the good and bad bits? Obviously he can't have been, so, like all hardback pilots of well-travelled cruising grounds, you would be better off giving the money to a crackhead*, and getting the info off the web and the HM.

*or towards a CA membership, share one with some mates, you can all log in with the same ID, works out to be good value. Apparently..

Not as good value as a properly paid for subscription to the Cruising Association. Pilfering is never attractive.

I was giving sound advice to the OP, what I said is factually correct and will give him up-to-date pilotage info and save him money. If you haven't got anything useful to say, go and wring out your knickers somewhere else.

To the OP: There is a good website called visitmyharbour which is less out of date than the books, amongst many other sources, Mark Fishwick is a good author. I personally like TC's jolly-hockey -sticks writing style, but it needs checking with a recent source! All the best Jerry

Perhaps oldvarnish's point here is that the CA isn't, to the best of my knowledge, a big evil multinational run for profit (I could be wrong about that :-). Its resources are paid for by dividing the cost between members. If 5 people are sharing one account that puts the burden of payment more on the other members. Telling someone they can nick new charts from the chandler (which I'm not saying is quite in the same league) would be factually correct, give them up to date info and save them money but well intentioned though it might be, I could understand some people objecting to it.

I am not a member of the CA (tried it and it wasn't worth it for me) but I could understand members being cross about someone encouraging others to use the resources without contributing a fair share

I see what you mean Laika, I didn't mean to annoy any CA members..
To the OP, Tom Cunliffe has a website including podcasts of his pensees and musings, you could ask him directly!

One poster here:

Says there's a new version due out, though I don't know whether that's based on insider knowledge or the previous release history (1995, 1997 2000 2002 2006 2009 from what I can google). Certainly from the latter we should be due a new one.

EDIT: Actually no. If this is a mensa test I'd say (looking only at the Cunliffe versions) we're due a new one in 2014. The subsequent one will be 2023.

Pretty poor that the corrections/updates for the channel pilot are just one page and dated 2010. Compare and contrast the volume and frequency of updates to Mr. Heikell's med books

Highly unlikely he's been everywhere, recently, of course. But some of his writings have mentioned trips to check things for the Pilot.

Of course, most of the relevant changes don't need a personal visit by boat by the named author. The book does encourage readers to email with information where the text is out of date, and Imray also apparently appoint informal reps in many ports who are supposed to let them know about changes. How active that system actually is I don't know.

Pete

I know it's to of date by the time it's printed, but I keep a copy on board. It was invaluable on my first night approach to St Vaast. There are harboureds up and down the channel that have changed little over the years and it does no harm to have a quick look before entering one you've not been to before. In daylight, you'll pick up ant major alterations, at night there navigation marks are seldom far from the published place. Up to date charts are more important and how many of us religiously update those? Not me anyway.

Let's stick to the point. Information gathered by the Cruising Association and displayed on their website is paid for by the subscriptions that many thousands of members pay. If you are using deceit to use that information without paying for it and cannot see a moral dilemma, I feel for you.

That does not constitute an apology to Old Varnish for your uncalled for rudeness...... Does it?

No :) But then again, I have never logged in to the CA website.
I can see that it must be galling when someone pays a hundred bucks for exclusive pilotage information, to contemplate the info being shared by/with the oi polloi.. so feel free to pray for my soul ;)

TC was signing and selling discounted copies of the current Shell Pilot at the SBS - so I did ask him when the next edition was due. Whilst he didn't give a firm promise of a date, from what he said I took the view that it'd be better to wait until the start of next season than buy now.
I think that's me still being a bit optimistic - and certainly if it were to be for Christmas we'd see it by now.
