\'She could be a fast boat if you replaced...\' - 22\' to 28\'

Since my purchase of a Feeling 720 has fallen through, one suggestion made by a friend has stuck in my mind. For my budget I could go out and buy the Splinter that he used to have and completely replace the rigging, the spars, the sails and the instrumentation to my own specification.

Whilst its a piecemeal way of doing things, it is not such a bad idea, but I am not sure that the Splinter is the hull I would go for. So here is where I would appreciate peoples views, I would be looking to pick up something from £800 to £3k, in good condition, but does not need to be in shiny condition at all and the state of the sails, rigging and the like is not important. I want to end up with four berths and a fixed galley. Preferably room for a seatoilet as well so that a couple could go cruising for the weekend but primarilly she would be raced.

Ideas?

A quick trawl through adverts shows two models that should have reasonable performance without breaking the bank.Achilles 24 or a Hunter701.Both are solidly built mid 70s designs (py no 107 or thereabouts) although a bit cramped for cruising. It is a buyers market at the moment and you might be surprised if you make an offer on something priced a bit higher. There are some good minitonners and a couple of J24s on the market at between 3-3950.

I used to have an Impala 28. Very good boat, quite quick, but racing was dominated by those with lots of heavy crew. It might be a cheap well equipped boat though, very seaworthy and well built.

I got my eboat for £2250. These are fast craft with four berths and galley. Also look good for a 30 year old design. Main issue is 4ft headroom. Have a look at the assoc. website http://www.e-boats.org.uk/

I meant that by the time you've bought a new rig etc you would have spent the price of something with a well sorted rig.
No idea what Impalas fetch now but they were fairly 'affordable' when I sold mine. Just a thought at the time and probably not the most relevant post I've made,
Cheers,
Chris
