Sharks in the Mediterranean

Haven't been to the Med for a while now but last time I was in Malta a Great White, carcharadon carcharias was landed and weighed in at over 1,800lb.
Not a world record but certainly an eye opener for myself and the divers I was training at the time.
Hope the shark population in the med is not going or has not gone the way of the groupers and snappers.

Just found this very worrying report-

If you want to talk to some one who is in the water every day contact my friends Patrick and Gail at-

We saw a 2-3m shark between Syracusa and Marzamemi 4 weeks ago. Unfortunately (Especially for my 10 year old son who has a field guide on shark ID, and has been waiting for an opportunity to use it in anger for 2 years!) it was too rough to get an ID on what type it was.

Still it was logged as the first we have seen in the Med', which is a real shame as there should be somewhere near 10 species of large shark in here including 3 types of Hammer Head.

I was told that the Med and Aegean were at one time ( if not still) breeding grounds for Great Whites.

The decline of the mediteranean seal (Monacus Monacus) might mean that they have moved on, possibly after eating most of them.

Where we are in the Aegean we have one of the last monacus breeding grounds, perhaps I should be a bit more carefull swimming, just in case Mr Sharky is looking for lunch.

In addition to MikeHibb, I too have heard that the Med is not only a breeding ground for Great Whites, but one of the largest breeding grounds for them.

Possible extrapoloation on that - in deep water, which is what the GW's like, and the med could possibly make a good nursery for the young sharks.

Haven't seen any though, nor any recent documentaries on sharks in the med. Surprising really, there are 46 known species of shark in the med, with 16 being quite large. Its the most travelled and visited body of water in the world and is relatively a small area of sea.

I saw hammerheads in the Gulf of Fethiye, Turkey in the nineties.
Saw a huge shark that had been landed in Marmaris then too; could have been a great white.
Also spent an hour alongside a whale and her calf one day out of Antibes.
Cheers,
Chris

Has anyone seen any sharks in the Mediterranean within the last 1-2 years? (and I don't mean the two legged local authority kind).

I was on the way back from a wreck dive (El Faroud) off Malta when a portbeagle passed overhead. This was two years ago.
The biggest Great White ever landed, a 28 + footer, was caught in the same area, Congrieve Straits, back in the 60's. I remember because the family lived on the island at the time.
Local fishermen don't believe me when I tell then that's a tiddler against the basking sharks at home.

About 5 years ago we where reeling in a nice Tuna up the back steps of a sailing catamaran in Palma Bay Mallorca when a bloody great shark came out of the water and snatched the Tuna, the crew reckoned it was 10 - 12 foot long, 4 days later in more or less the same position we got a bag caught on one of the props and it took a bit of persuasion to get a crew over the side to cut it off.

Leading on from the original question, does anyone know if there are any safe bathing spots/low shark traffic areas, or is it just a matter of: if there's water, there's gonna be a big fish with big teeth?

You are referring to Great Whites ?

Generally they prefer deeper water.

A Great White was tagged off the coast of South Africa and tracked.

It swam all the way to Australia, at an average depth of 600 feet.

But not enough is yet known about their habits to be absolutely sure.

Quite a lot of the meddy is over 2000 meters deep.
