On a recent visit to Bermuda (by plane), SWMBO bought a Shark Oil Barometer which is basically a glass tube about 2inches long and 0.5 inch in diameter.

The text with it says:
... the barometer is a simple device made from a test tube filled with the oil extracted from the livers of sharks caught in local waters. The tube is sealed in a manner to protect the oil from moisture etc.

The local fisherman use anything from rum bottles to aspirin bottles to make their barometers.

Reading the barometer is basically simple. WHen the oil is clear, so the weather will be, and just the opposite for cloudy oil. Cloudy peaks forming inside are a sign of high winds. There are many other telltale formations you will learn from a daily glimpse.

End of text.

Haven't studied it in detail yet , but the oil has certainly cleared today. There is a small quantity of white goo at the bottom.

It is an interesting little ornament if nothing else !

Anybody used these, or anything similar, for serious forecasting?

I have tried a quaint little thing called the BBC website! Today it says:

Sunny Intervals - 19°C - 8mph wind - sun index moderate -1019mb

So...just stuck my head outside...big black clouds, 15 and blowing old boots...sunny intervals my arris...stick to the shark oil!

there is another type of similar barometer (I actually thought it was the same but indeed they are different), it was called stormglass and often used by Adm Fitzroy on the Beagle

instead of shark liver oil, the liquid is a mixture of camphor, ammonium nitrate, alcohol, etc, and likewise changes appearance with the weather
on the net there is a bit of "research" showing it is modified by electro magnetic field changes, fwiw -.<)
