Sad that he should die so young, another victim of tobacco presumably.

I thought his voyage was too much of a stunt to be that inspirational, but a good read all the same.

Very Sad ....but he did have a good trip.....those days I think have gone....
Guzwell , Rosie Swales... etc, etc........

got a book signed by him when he was one of the first boats to sail to Bedford after the river ouse had been opend up to the sea....may have been a stunt but I for one take my hat off to him.

I did not know his life was over - thank you for posting it. I confess I doubt I have much in common with him - but I strongly recommend his books to anyone - the description of extracting his own tooth mid ocean will remain with me for ever. He seemed very matter of fact about his lack of qualifications for ocean sailing, but in reality he was obviously a very accomplished sailor, and a very unusual person in this age where security and pensions have to take presidence over risk and adventure for most of us.
