YES

Whether Ellen won or came second is beside the point. For a minority sport like ours to be up there with the massively televised sports like football is achievement enough. I am sure it will attract people into trying out sailing in dinghies. yacht or even cats. I remember the YM Instructor on my Coastal Skipper course saying how much extra business "Maiden" created.
Ellen is an inspiration and a role model. Her unaffected love of the sea hasn't changed since the 1993 Boat Show where she just loved to sit in her old Corribee and talk sailing to anyone and everyone. Before long she'll be back to take the winner's trophy on BBC.

Re: Declaration

too late Willy...you've been outed!! To stay in England you now have to attend civil etiquette classes which include lessons on how to......drop litter, let your pooch foul the paths, let your kids play truant, be a professional lager lout (two parts to this; first is at football matches, then the next is every weekend), be a noisy neighbour, hate the Europeans and believe everything you read in the papers!

Re: Would it have benefitted yachting generally...

I agree absolutely Andrew.

TV coverage of any sport is always for the benefit of TV, not the sport.

Cricket has been terminally damaged by the need for a 1 day result,

Soccer is on the verge of a strike for distribution of the spoils,

Motor Sport is reduced to rolling advertising hoardings.

The average television programme is made for an audience with an attention span measured in seconds. Sailing cannot fit that mould. Your analysis of how it will develop is spot on.

Nothing against Ellen at all, she is a credit to herself and this is a fitting recognition of her achievements. And it is her achievement and not some collective win for sailing as a whole.

Theres nothing like a dame........

doing well in a male dominant sport to get publicity. Also being female, she managed to get top notch sponsorship !

In no way do I knock her or her achievement though but this has to be said.

As already mentioned, TV has murdered sport by over exposure rendering it almost unwatchable to over forties brought up on sprinklings that one used to look forward to.

Heavily sponsored sailing is starting to make sailors look rather self indulgent making a career out of it which is what Ellen is doing. I could take to it more if they took 'time out' in their lives and just did it for charity.

Lest we not forget the likes of Frank Dye of Wayfarer fame - a true sportsman who just did it for the hell of it. Where did he come in Sportsman of The Year ? Now that's sailing !

It is of course left to us Corinthian types to carry the mantle of civilised sporting endeavours in these islands. First rule - never practice.

Old Git ! Borrowing your handle for this one - hope this is O.K.

Ellen has been there

She bought her first boat by saving her dinner money at school.
She sailed around Britain solo in a 21 footer (Vivacity? Corribee?).
She nearly bankrupted herself to put together an entry in the poor man's Transatlantic Race, the Mini-Transat (6.5M max length).

Only THEN did sponsors notice her. Talk to her (I did at the '93 Boat Show) and two things are obvious - a total love of sailing and an absolute passion to succeed.

Re: Shame about Beckham\'s dress sense, too! nm

How did he write the book? Didn't know he could speak!

Re: Shame about Beckham\'s dress sense, too! nm

The show was called "Sports personality of the year" that's why she didn't win, she hasn't got one. Just like the rest of you raggies ;¬)

Simple.

Re: Shame about Beckham\'s dress sense, too! nm

Talk about letting the side down Kev. A nasty swipe like this just after one of the stinkies won message of the month for creating peace and harmony between all forums. We should lock you into this forum as pennance for your sins, then stick you in a smelly bilge for a week-end! oops sorry forgot you do that for pleasure anyway! Are your mates on MBC aware of this raid, better keep it quiet!

Re: Shame about Beckham\'s dress sense, too! nm

Sorry David but I couldn't let you get away with your post -

"...yeh an wots more iz nun of em stinkpots as eva bin numinated, mainly cuz vey cant spel or rite propa.....i nose cuz i wuz jus lukin at vere forem!"

After all I resemble that remark!!

no worries

...mine was in reposte to one I read on MBC earlier and designed to tempt a response, so well bitten!! All in a good days foruming!! You need eyes in the back of your ears to keep track of the fun & games across all these sites. Maybe they should narrow it down to three sites; one for rib tickling, one for serious stuff and one for those who can't get their head around either of these two!

Re: Beckham again

Of course he has, he lends it to Brooklyn to play with in the bath!

Now then, I see on the news that the lovely Ellen has won the Sunday Times female sports personality of the year award. She was saying that Becks showed quite an interest in her sport when they were chatting after the BBC show on Sunday. So he might be getting one - any guesses as to what would suit him best?
Would he be a stinkie or a raggie?

Re: no worries stinkies

All stinkies would naturally gather on the BB reserved for polite well behaved v.clever handsome young gods.IMHO
