Shallow dive gear

Re: Test update ........

This is an old thread - but has anyone used the arrangement at post 80 or similar and found it works well?

Re: Test update ........

I didn't notice it was old until NM's name turned up.

Over on the WBF, there was a thread on hookas and an OZ poster put up a useful guide from some authority down there. Do's & dont's. Worth a search.

Read a book way back, Ordeal by Water, by Peter Keeble, a Naval disposal officer. In the Med they used standard diving compressors with hoses down to gas masks, no regulators. So the equivalent of the snorkle with purge valve.

Edit: here is the WBF thread. http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthread.php?219448-Ever-built-a-Hookah&highlight=Hooka

Re: Test update ........

Dear All,

Thought I would reply and give a quick update as this thread seems to have resurfaced (pardon the pun)! In the end we purchased a Hookah battery powered unit and had it shipped out to Nigeria. I have no connection with the company but have to say it performed superbly. We had a a twin hose system but I only ever dived alone.

On average I dived at least once a week for around one to two hours at a time although I did do a marathon prop change and hull scrub that was three hours in the morning and then another three after a break, I certainly slept well that night!

Although the unit did draw a fair amount of current and I made sure I properly drained the tank of water after each time it never let me down or needed even needed even basic repairs or maintainance. Given that I was diving in extreme heat, humidity and pollution it was ever relatable for over two years and when I left was still going strong.

Previously I had only ever dived with the usual bottle set up but much preferred the ease and freedom the hose line provided not to mention not having to get bottles recharged.

Hope the above is helpful.

Cheers.
