does anyone know what height of tide is needed to access the quay at shalfleet from Newtown harbour in a tender- wouldn't want to get to newtown but be unable to reach the pub!

I can't help you there but it reminds me of a pleasant occasion when I found myself unable to leave the pub because there was not enough tide to float the dinghy!

I remember this - make sure your painter is L..O...N...G !!! I can remember a few dinghys hanging of the quay !!

But the reverse is miserable!

About 20 years ago YM staff developed a reputation for not being able to calculate tides. This was reinforced during one office outing when the plan was to anchor all the staff's boats in Newtown and have a jolly supper in the Shalfleet Arms.

The fleet duly anchored, including the photographer's RIB (no names, no pack drill). A G&T or two were downed before it was decided to head off for the pub. Sadly, instead of being at half flood, the tide was now at half ebb. The RIB got to about 100 yards of the pub before sticking solid.

Undaunted, the YM team stripped to its underware (male and female) and dragged the dinghy through the mud to the quay. The landlord was not sympathetic to a seven-strong party of smelly, mud-caked hacks arriving an hour after their reservation and dinner was served in the garden.

I missed this fiasco, having had a pressing engagement in Yarmouth that night, but joined the chastened and hung-over team the next day.

My first child was conceived there for a similar reason /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I think it is something like an hour before HW and about 2 hours after on all but neaps if I remember correctly. If you get it wrong, this is what you are left with:
