The regatta is an easy going bucket and spade event and you can generally borrow a boat to join in. Watching the dinghy racing is grand because you can often see the whole course and a boat failing to nail a mark gets swept by the tide, the length of the harbour, to have another go, great fun.
The Shaldon Regatta pulling dinghy is a lovely thing - thinking of getting one myself.
