Shafts v IPS

I would take some real convincing that IPS is the " way to go" I really like shaft drive, but I have never owned an IPS boat and maybe my thoughts are misplaced.

Has anyone switched from shaft drive to IPS and seen benefits?

Is IPS the way to go??

Is shaft drive still the best and simplest drive system for 40 footers and above ?

I know this will be a boring done to death topic, but I have a real interest here.

Shafts been around forever, it works, and control when berthing is a dream, so I am thinking it's the best, but is it, or is it?

I don't know as never driven an IPS, like the fact that it would appear to creat more internal space but.....

On a brand spanking new boat with a battalion of white coated techobods and double jointed mechanics with eyes on stalks on the march instantly you quote the warranty number or your credit card details, no problem at all .

You don't really get that choice do you ? Most 40-50' seem to be on drives or pods and would you really want to compromise all other choices just to go with a shaft drive ?
I have been boat searching and the 3 comparable boats that I like from 3 different manufacturers were all with IPS; they were all just above 50'.

It really has been done to death, I'll just leave it at; should any forumite find themselves in proximity to us, come on board, come out for a spin and take a look through our service receipts. Always happy to help but the lack of objectivity here is a teensie bit silly.

And yes, for the right boat I'd go back to shafts, like most owners we choose boats with more than the drive criteria in mind.

Our boat is shaft driven, and have no complaints with it, Had the use of a IPS driven boat for the day last year when in Sydney and was quite taken back by it , 1st time we have driven one, handled well ,steering was responsive and berthing in a strong wind was stress free, no bow thruster either, considering we had never sailed it before, thought it was great and can see the appeal ,

Things do move on, I appreciate that, I am open minded, so for now I will have a closer look and take it from there

Paul, you'd be welcome, we are in Plymouth early Mayband then the CI's after that you may have a trip on your hands as we are heading to Portugal.

We never need and excuse to take the boat out

Here we go, I have just moved to the dark side(ips) from out drives.
Honest opinion you can do things in a strong wind with the engines better than using the ips, how ever having the safety of flicking a switch which can get you out of a right old mess is brilliant, for this alone it's worth the extra service cost IMHO. On a nice day to glide in between 2 boats with no noise or fuss is what it's all about, and my wife and kids love it ?

Sailing down slowly May/June/July/August and berth booked for September 1st.

Be cheeky, your welcome to have a go in the Solent as said any excuse to get out. For me IPS simply takes all the stress out of parking the boat (last boat had legs but have driven shafts as well) you can literally with the use of a joystick that also rotates move the boat in any direction or rotation or a combination of both. Yes with a bit of practice you can make it look a bit smoother to an observer (there is always one when you are mooring). When you are drifting towards the nasty pile you simply push the joystick in the opposite direction. Never measured it but IPS is supposed to be much more efficient that's why it called an IPS500 when it being driven by a D6-370 as it is supposed to be equivalent to a 500hp shaft driven boat but I suspect some of that is marketing speak. No big shocks, for me, maintenance bill wise but it does hold a lot of expensive oil that needs changing every year or so and I could appreciate if I hit a submerged obstacle with it its going to be expensive.
