Shafted!

you assumed that it is badly corroded, define badly, 1/4" deep? surface marking? you dont know. when was the last time a prop shaft broke on you? why do you need to recut the taper? a 1" spacer will only move the prop back 1"!! there is plenty of room on my bene oceanis to move it back several inches!! as vyv cox has pointed out with his usual knowledge the material used in prop shafts doesnt necessarily have to be 316 s/steel.

You ask how long a shaft should last.
My Beneteau Evasion 32 is 27 years old and is using the original propshaft. No pitting or corrosion last year when fitting a new cutless bearing. Boat was originally based on east Coast, but now enjoys the luxury of Pompey harbour!

This thread seems to be bringing out the worse in people. The point about the spacer is about wear not crevice corrosion. On what basis do you assume that 1" is sufficient if it is to clear wear? My point is that what's the point of moving the shaft back if there is no wear as described here. I don't think you will find anything I said contradicts vyv cox about the material used in prop shafts. I asked a reasonable question about how to polish a crevice - and got an answer; and I have not criticised that answer.

how do you polish a crevice? i explained that but you chose to ignore it, IMHO sarcasm was intended. vyv and others have already explained that crevice corrosion is a technical term covering a whole spectrum of a type of corrosion.
i am now bored.

I have a Beneteau Evasion 36, 43hp 2003T Volvo Penta - built 1992 and original 30mm shaft still OK.

Need to replace the folding prop however. Also need a cutlass bearing - anybody
happen to know the part number for the bearing?

Thanks.
