I saw an article in PBO which showed a drive shaft with a groove worn in it by a lip-seal repaired with a thin tubular s/s shell.
Does anyone these repair kits can be obtained in the UK.

IMHO Dont bother with faffing about with the shaft. Very often it is possible to ensure the seal position is moved a little, then the groove and the seal do no co-incide, therefore irrelavent(unless groove seriously deep affecting strength). Some boats have 'floating' rubber tubes holding the seals, and it is dead easy to move it 1mm or so_Others not quite as easy but often do-able.

yes... the're called 'speedi-sleeve' stocked by bearing stockists. marketed by SKF in the UK.
Cheap as chips and work well.

Welcome David, I missed that article in PBO about Speedi Sleeve,would have saved me some research. However I,ve just fitted one to the crankshaft of the Volvo TAMD 30 that will hopefully power BRIZA again! The crank seal had worn a nice groove on the shaft and various options were muted, new crank remove crank and get it "built up" move the seal as suggested earlier or fit a Speedi Sleeve. Rightly or wrongly I,ve gone for the Sleeve method, sounds like a contraceptive! All I can say at this stage is that it felt right when I put it on. Which is more than you can say about a contraceptive.The engine will be fitted back in the boat soon and I,m confident all will be OK. Touch wood ,cross fingers,don,t walk under a ladder etc.Price wise said sleeve for 4 inch diameter was 60 quid , so for my application rather cheap what! On a prop shaft if you can move the seal no problem if the new area is "clean".The sleeve was sourced from a Raggie who has an engine fixing firm in Warrington the local bearing and engineering bods (North Wales) didn,t have a clue If you need one give me a PM .I think it,s a good product

I noted Kawasaki's reply with interest.

I am thinking of using the sleeve for the shaft driving the cooling water impellor for a Volvo 2003.

In 2002 I had a leak from the cooling water pump. Over that winter I replaced the lipseals. This didnt really work and winter 2003/4 I replaced the shaft (which had a very noticeable groove) and the seals again. This summer the leak started again, and I have just disassembled the pump for the third time. The shaft has a slight groove after only one season (probably about 100 engine hours).

What quality s/s do they use, or do the make them from left-over Swedish cheese?

I had the idea that the sleeve would probablk have a harder and smoother surface then the shaft (apart from the cost saving).

Any comments?

Reference the quality of said Speedi Sleeve Davidej. I was initially a bit dubiuos about the gadget,will it move?will it expand? will it disintergrate? is it made of Swedish cheese! Various bods were consulted, and when the Sleeve arrived it was tested for it,s cheese element and none was detected. I know these things I,m in catering don,t you know! Plus a sly call to the men who paint engines green who all but admitted that the Sleeve has been used on their Sail Drive thingy,s which seem to have had similar problems but don,t tell anybody shhhss.The Sleeve slid on perfectly and in another life I used to mend motorcycles hence the Kawasaki bit so I,m used to Gorgonzola early Jap stuff.Plus the boat is Swedish so I,m well qualified. Christ I hope it doesn,t spew oil out when I refit. Could have shot myself in the leg there.The surface is much cleaner than the origional obviously the shaft is 20 years old as I mentioned. I am quietly confident it will work ok it was a major decision cos if I,m wrong I,ve got to remove the engine again. if you can re position the seal with confidence use that method as a cure. If you have doubts about it stick a Sleeve on,. Not sure what to advise about your pump, what diameter is it? and how easy to access? Hoping to stick the engine back into the Nimbus next week,then we will see .Fingures crossed praying to Neptune,Allah ,God, She,s in the kitchen at the moment, whilst I,m destroying credit card statements with boaty bits on in my "office"Gods watching T Wogan and children in need, mine need shoes and three square meals a day. But how can you when the boat needs loads a money and tender loving care. Keep you informed Kawasaki

The cooling pump is very easily accessible - it is bang in front of you when you remove the front cover. I can also easily disconnect the pump and take it home for repairs - assuming I remember to turn the seacock off!

Thus I will probably give it a go as the replacement shaft is rediculously expensive for what is only a s/s rod 12mm dia and about 100mm long with a slot at one end and a hole at the other.
