shaft gland filler

Hi,
I took off the stern gland for replacement, and I noticed there was some sort of filler which acted as a gasket and at the same time fill the uneven gap. I cannot recognise what is the type of filler which princess used. If anyone knows what type, I will appreciate thank you.

Not sure what you are referring to but it may be "gland packing" best described as grease impregnated rope.

I am referring to the putty used to fix the complete unit in place. Not the shaft packing. It looks like hard metal.
