I have recently been aware of an issue with said item such that I am unable to transmit or receive anything on channel 80. All other channels are fine And this happens on low and high power. Has anyone else had this problem? I’ve checked aerial connections - goes through an Emtrak splitter and voltage is good at the unit. Comments before I talk to Standard Horizon in Winchester. .....thanks.

Are you trying to call another boat or calling a marina? Channel 80 is a duplex channel so no good for talking to other boats. Should work talking to a marina. If not working to a shore station then maybe a programming glitch which might be fixed by SH if you speak nicely. They are usually good in this respect .

I’m calling my handheld vhf elsewhere in our marina, then tring the marina and also not getting any response. Nothing is being received either.

You won't get a handheld on a duplex channel because you are transmitting on one frequency and it is listening on another.

You need a shore station like the marina involved. They often don't respond on VHF if they are busy. Have you tried ringing them up first and asking if they can hear a call on 80?

Channel 80 transmits on one frequency and receives on another. Your fixed and handheld sets both do this, so it is impossible to hear a transmission from the fixed set on the handheld and vice versa. Both sets can only hear transmissions from shore stations.

You can check the fixed set is transmitting by changing the handheld to the US channel set, which uses different frequencies to the UK (int) channel set. If the fixed set is on UK (int) and the handheld is on US they can talk to each other.

I’m sorry but what do you actually mean? Over the years I have many times called on 16 and gone to 80 to test both handheld and boats vhf’s.

So what’s the difference if I call 80 to the marina but I’m at the marina with my handheld set ? Cannot I not answer on the handheld, and if so what is the difference between the Marina’s VHF and my handheld !

Both of your sets transmit on 157.025 and receive on 161.625.

So if you transmit on the fixed set at 157.025 the HH won't receive it as it's listening on 161.625. The marina will hear it, as its shore based station is listening on 157.025.

You must have noticed that when you are near a marina you can hear the marina transmitting to other vessels, but you cannot hear the other vessels ?

Like i said, change the HH to the US channel set and you should be able to hear the fixed set transmission.

Sorrry if I appear stupid (and probably am!) but why is my Marina’s vhf any different to my ships or handheld vhf in the way it Rx or Tx ? Interestingly I’m sure I have been able to do and hear what you say I shouldn’t be able to do, so maybe I have got it set to a US setup which I’ll check and report on.

Perhaps it slipped the net Pete. and was not reprogrammed for Europe.

Given the OP’s response to Paul it seems most likely he simply doesn’t understand duplex channels. Failing that, maybe the radio got switched to the US channel map, which is something you can do in the menus and doesn’t imply incorrect dealer programming. There’s no mention of channels M and M2 missing. So your idea of it being a non-uk-programmed radio seems a bit of a stretch with no actual basis in anything.

Pete

Because it’s programmed as the shore side of a duplex channel.

Yes I’m obviously lacking in my knowledge about duplex operating as I had no idea that marinas had a different type of vhf setup to one that was on my own boat. The channel setup up on these sets must differ from those that we ie. general public - can buy off the shelf? I did however realise that RNLI etc have their setup to enable channel 0 !

I’ll say again fairly recently this season I have called my wife on our yacht on 16 from our hand held and then gone to 80 and chatted to her there so something is not right.

Channel list showing transmit frequencies and usage for all channels. You will notice that all duplex (D) channels have different transmit frequencies for ship and shore stations, you can’t chat to another ship vhf on a duplex channel and shouldn’t be using those channels for that purpose anyway.
